Is that Alzheimers. or Alz Heimers? It has always been Land Rover, at least where it matters, I would have thought. [bigwhistle]

I'd laugh, Mario, but apparently Ian is younger than me... I have only his word for this, so I am unsure.

The company seems to have changed some time in the 1980s. Looking at my company publications, all the ones up to the early eighties, including a late (1981) Series 3 owners manual use "Land-Rover". But the September 1988 dated 2a and 3 Optional Equipment manual uses "Land Rover".
Personally, I usually use "Landrover" - saves keystrokes!

At one stage is used to be Land on one line and Rover on the next line with a Z joining them - like this sign in the next Shannons auction. I have seen it like this on a number of old workshop manuals and old series emblems - but also on modern landies as well.

Is it 'Landie' or 'Landy'? 'Rangey' or 'Rangie'?

Yes and that "Z" or I prefer "lightning bolt" is the hyphen in Land-Rover.

It was a car built after the war (as everybody probably knows) by the rover company. So Land Rover would be my bet. At some point it became it's own brand (after the BMW debacle and end of Rover as a company) and it could have become a single word but I guess they did not do that :)

Of course it matters, although I see a case for moving this to the Grumpy old buggers thread. Ian should know better......

Actually, the model "Land Rover" (a particular model Rover) became a marque (a brand of cars covering a number of models) to solve the problem of what to call the down-market Rangerover that needed to be linked to the successful Rangerover (but not too closely) and Landrover. The solution was to take the name from the Land Rover, use this as a marque name for all three models, rename the Land Rover as "Land Rover Defender", the Rangerover as "Land Rover Rangerover" and name the new model "Land Rover Discovery". The subsequent other new models were similarly named.

Hmm... Both my Discos say LANDROVER on the bonnet, but they say Land Rover on the back door. Perhaps they didn't know themselves. That would be unsurprising.

Similarly and now in the same stable, Jaguar actually started off as Swallow Sidecars, and had an SS Jaguar model, but after WWII decided to change the company's name to Jaguar.

My old Rangies were Range Rovers i.e. two words.

Mine says:
"LAND>
<ROVER" on the steering wheel, guess that's the Z hyphen thing between the two words *shrug*
