SWMBO took the D4 to town this morning.
Half way there, she rang and told me that here was a red triangle on the dash that wouldn't turn off ... but NO warning message.
Not knowing what the fault was .. I told her that it may go into 'reduced performance mode' but it should be ok until she got back home.
Got another call from her a little later saying that she was parked in town and couldn't lock the doors because she had no key.
As it turned out, I had the key in my pocket when I said goodbye to her in the driveway .... so the car started without issue.

I'm surprised that there was NO message on the message centre saying ... KEY NOT PRESENT!!

So, it looks like it's possible to drive off without a key and 'strand' yourself until someone brings you the key.[bigsad]

It's a good thing I kept the D2!![bigsmile1]

The key must have been within the proximity zone of the numerous key antennas inside the vehicle when it was started for it to start. You can then take the key away and continue driving but yeah, when you turn it off you’re screwed.

Mine brought a message up on the dash,as well, but I can’t remember what it was, possibly something about smart key.

Only happened if vehicle was running and key fob was moved out of range,or vehicle was stopped and start button pushed, but key was out of range.

How do you turn off a push button start vehicle?

My MY14 does come up with a message saying the key is out of range while the engine is running. The message does clear from the screen after a while. Not sure if you go into the dash menu if it still shows the message in the ‘warnings’ section.

They are just like Microsoft computers, you press the "START" button to stop the motor.[bigrolf]

My dealer told me about the missing key issue when I picked up the car, especially when you're at an airport!

But more importantly, what was the Red triangle issue about

The red triangle comes up to warn you the key is not found within the vehicle, along with the message.

Ah Ok, the red triangle hasn't shown on mine when I've left the car for a while, hence I thought it was another problem.

My beloved has one key - her responsibility - and I have another, and never the twain shall meet, but also with a not advertised 3rd one hidden away, just in case[bigwhistle]. Now, where did I put that??

"SMART KEY NOT FOUND" is the error message, and yes it stays until such time that the key is returned to the car. I thought it was not possible to turn the car off if the key was not inside the car, same interlock as when the transmission is not in park.

Ive never tried turning it off (by pressing the start button ??!!) With the keys not in it though...

A few years ago Qld police on Sunny Coast had a then new fully loaded police car stolen while they were otherwise busy near by. [bawl] Thief got in a just pressed start![bigrolf]

I had the key in my bag. My daughter dropped me off at an appointment. As I went through my bag after my daughter took off I found the key. I told her not to stop and drive straight home. She said a red triangle came up not sure if she found the message but realised she didn’t have the key as well.
quite funny!

.. the "SMART KEY NOT FOUND" message I've had, when the key was not in the vehicle and I have 'tried' to start it ... but in this case, I started the car because I had the key in my pocket and when I moved away, it produced the red triangle warning but NO other messages.
I'm going to recreate this fault and check to see if the car engine will turn off, as you mention, because that would be useful to know.

No, the engine will keep running (this is obvious when you consider the safety implications) and will shut down normally when the start/stop button is pushed. But that's it. It won't start until a key is within range.
