View Full Version : BMW M62 Belt Tensioner Pulleys... These are apparently the right ones!

I'll find out soon enough, but I've got a couple noisy tensioner pulleys...

The Dayco 89052 x 2 and Dayco 89144 (AC) are the "right" ones according to the BMW forums. They are really cheap (about $25 for the main belt each and 17 for the smaller AC one). 2 of my 3 are noisy and have play. I've got a new drivebelt on now, but my "2000-2500rpm" droning sound is still happening.

The water pump has a very little bit of play (could hear it when moving it up/down but couldn't see it), everything else was tight as, which is nice.

These tensioners are expensive to buy as a whole unit and replacing just the pulleys hopefully works well!

Funny you should post this now, I've just tracked down a nasty whine from my engine bay to my AC compressor and checked all my pulleys today. AC bearing is crusty as. Might order some spares, thanks for the part numbers.

Regarding the compressor, MR Automotive here in QLD quoted me 3k for replacement... When i asked why a common Denso unit is $2200, when i can order one tomorrow for $400 to my door he said they only source genuine parts... hmm Land Rover tax, tasty.
Another shop quoted me $1650 ballpark and I'm waiting for another quote to come back

Might just source the parts and get a shop to fit. Whats the book time, a few hours? Its like 6 bolts.

I’d also be interested to know about the pulleys.

I replaced my water pump when I fitted a new alternator. The cost was minimal compared with the effort of going back in later. Mine had a little play in it, too.

I didn't have any pulleys on me when I did the belt! My belts were both very cracked, so it was a matter of time.

It isn't a long job to pull the fan out and shroud, about 15mins out and back in so I'm not worried about that.

The Dayco 89052 are metal apparently too rather than the existing plastic... There is a plastic variant too.

The only way I can describe my noise is a "drive belt vibration" or "drive belt drone"... It only occurs under load and only at about 2000-2500 rpm... It might be the gearbox or torque converter or something too... But it is odd it only occurs under load which is driving me mad as nothing belt driven should suddenly be louder under acceleration vs coasting at the same rpm!

Confirmed that these pulleys work!

Fitted them today... Very little difference in noise that I can hear, unfortunately. Only took an hour to do all 3.

Next up is to buy a water pump and thermostat...

Current pump isn't dead but does have a little bearing noise when spun fast by hand and has a little play up/down. I was going to leave it, but rather be safe than sorry.

Well...

I got the water pump off today! Along with part of the coolant transfer pipe... Unfortunately enough broke off that it wouldn't be behind the o-ring... It is corroded badly anyway so it's dead.

New non genuine one is $70 so that's cheap...

Bad news is that I'm suspecting I probably won't be able to reuse the old o-ring in the coolant manifold in the rear, but I'm going to try and remove the existing pipe and see if the o-ring looks damaged... Not keen on pulling the manifold off...

Wow! That's impressive. I assumed the o-ring must have been genuine, but assumed pipe was non genuine given the cost! The BMW one is 246 from the dealer....ouch

Fine with me...until I need a second one and they are gone! (Joking, let's hope I never need another...)

To round this out... *Touches wood*

I removed the coolant transfer pipe (smaller one) by turning and pulling, greased the new with rubber grease and, with the help of a borescope, managed to get the new pipe in. It felt like it made a solid / rubbery o-ringy feeling connection... I twisted it a bit to make sure and it felt ok, not loose at least. Now I've fully reassembled it and driven it for 20mins or so and no leaks, I'm willing to call that a win.

Checking the history those seals were all last replaced in 2018, apparently, for the previous owner when doing the intake gaskets. (It doesn't make sense why they'd change these, but hey)

But... the water pump seal for this pipe was completely rooted, so much so that the new pipe would have been totally loose in it. Lucky I had a new pump and seals...

This was how bad the old pipe was!
