Which All Terrain 265/60/18

Hi All,

looking to get some new All Terrain tyres. My off-roading is more outback touring, Flinders Ranges, Birdsville Track, Oodnadatta Track etc.

I have done some “searching” on the various web sites..

just after some recent real world experience.

I’m looking at the likes of
BFG All Terrain
Falken Wildpeak
Toyo Open Country
Cooper AT3
Dunlop Grandtrek
Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac
Bridgestone Dueler A/T

I've got Yoko G015 and I'd say the wet weather performance is less than inspiring... The 3t weight plus corners means that they don't grip well, relatively, to a car of any form. Maybe my expectations were too high?

We have gone away from the Goodrich Cooper and Toyo options over the last few years..
We have currently settled on the maxxis Razr AT811.

I'm in the same boat Darren....same size too. Been poring over owner experiences and so called 'expert' reviews of different brands and patterns. I want off road grip mainly for High Country tracks and for when the rain turns these tracks into muddy slides.

For me major considerations are grip and stone puncture resistance. Too old to be changing tyres..anywhere. No more Grandtreks, Toyos or Bridgestones for me. I'd suggest that the Wildpeaks and the Duratracs might be contenders from your list but I've settled on one that you haven't included. That is the Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus.

The only two on that list I have personally used in 265/60/18 size is on my D3. The D697 Duelers were on my D3 when I bought it and I eventually replaced them with Falken Wildpeaks. The Duelers were a good tyre but they had an annoying habit of trapping small stones/gravel in the tread blocks and then flicking these out later at great speed. That's not so good when you are towing or for someone coming up behind you! Comparing the two, the Wildpeaks just feel a little more surefooted in most situations and are usually well priced compared to the others on the list.

I have had Wildpeaks on my Rangy for a year and a half and find them very good previously had Coopers and Bridgestone so far very happy going to fit a set on our Discovery next week.

I have the light truck wildpeaks 275/65/18, they've been great. Can't fault them apart from weight. I think they are 10ply. Very strong tyre.

Went to the local Tyrepower and wanted a price on the BFG just as a reference and then advice on whatever else they may recommend.

Didn’t give me a price on BFG’s as the didn’t have any and the system was telling him BFG in Australia didn’t have any either.
His recommendations was either Maxxs AT811 RAZR $350 each or Cooper AT3 $390 each.

I’m tempted on the Maxxs and it seems as though one of us has them already...

ThanksBfg were essentially unavailable when we were looking, but we had already decided to try something else. Don't get me wrong we had a pretty good run compared to everything else we had run on the D3, I should point out--we destroy tyres, if we ever get to 50 thousand it's party time.

Our roads are awful, and the last 2 sets of bfg on this car had lost massive chunks of tread leaving the wires exposed, and they probably still had 5 thousand km left, maybe more.

The Maxxis ticked all the boxes, aggressive tread , reasonable handling, I think they are 10 ply, good load rating, obviously much much much quieter than the KO2's- the world's noisy-est all terrain, and they are about $70 cheaper than we could have theoretically bought the bfg for.

We haven't done much on them yet, only been on for a few wks, maybe 8 thousand km, but so far so good, no flats etc.

Paid $339 fitted (normally do our own) so I thought that was good, they also look pretty good too imo.

Last tyre change I put Hankook dynapro atm on.
Heard they get noisey after 20 thou k,s but so far no more than normal tyre noise after 40 odd thou kays.
Found these to be a good tyre wet or dry,tar or dirt and I,m not exactly a slow driver.[bighmmm][biggrin]

I had the BFG 265/60/18's from shortly after purchase in 2014 and very happy with them- bought 2nd set last year after some 80,000 odd kms.
No issues at all. They are more noisy as they age but definitely quieter than a set of Cooper ST Maxx I had on my previous D3.
I've now bought a new Defender 110 D300 and sourced K02 LT 265/60/20's (load rating 121 much better than Duratrac's 113) from Sydney just recently - so I'd be surprised if 265/60/18 not available anywhere. Regards, David

I had the Hankook dynapro 265/60/18 AT with only done 3,000 km and performance is fantastic, yet to try in off-road mode.

Also using tyre monitor on dash this is great asset too

I have 265/60/18 wild peaks on the L322, very happy so far.
