I have dual battery setup but wanted to install a tyre air compressor onboard but not in the cabin. I have seen it setup in the second battery facility before, but wanted to get it into the area in front of the main battery. I did see this done on one of the forums before, so I knew it could be done - but couldn't find it again.
My understanding is the ARB CKMA12 is the smallest compressor with the highest output of any on the market and bought one online at Piranah for $345 I took a punt and bought a KAON ARB Air compressor mount ARB Air Compressor Mounting Bracket Prado and FJ Cruiser (https://www.kaon.com.au/arb-rear-air-compressor-and-switch-mounting-bracke) $66 to make the job a bit easier.
It has worked fine so I will upload a few pics and the process. The third hole was problematic as there is a second beam to drill through) but may be repositioned slightly – just bear this in mind when positioning as you may be able to adjust to miss this double thickness structural beam.. I used masking tape on the black paint to make the marking easier.
Start process
You’ll have to remove the (at least the front of) wheel cowling below the fender to get the ball rolling. Extended height using Llams and Offroad height was plenty of room.
First get Bracket out and fit into place in front of the main battery (left side in aussie) mark out the best spot for the holes.
I found You need to have the 3 leg bracket with two holes nearest the battery and one hole near the fender.
NOTE mount the compressor on the bracket ( just the bolts no nuts) and confirm the positioning is right (everything is pretty tight - not much wiggle room) Mark the holes.
You may also want to drill the holes to mount the Switch bracket if you have room on the fender wall. I did not have room as other relays had been installed here, so my only option was to attach to the Battery box wall I tried to rivet but needed a spacer – this is a bit dodgy but will hold and suffice for the time being. It would be better to screw to body for sure.
Drill the holes
Install the compressor onto the bracket and allow a fraction of movement to adjust with bolts from compressor to Mount, and then fit the combined unit into the space and drop in the (stainless) bolts (silicone for sealer if wanted) and fasten with locknuts and washers. Then fasten the slightly loose bolts compressor to mount bolts.
Once the unit is in place reinstall the wheel covers /cowl
I did not bring in the wiring into the cabin as I have to open bonnet to connect air hose so easier to switch from there. There are a few extra connectors for two Lockers but the only thing you need to do is to make sure you also connect the two small wires for the ignition (red yellow and Blue White)for the Led lighting on the switch. I did not have in cabin so I just connected to positive power.
Basically pretty tight space to fit all but it gets it out of the cabin and can help minimize the crap that builds up for a weekend away or a camp setup.
