Two weeks ago today there was a bit of a storm here in Vic. Bit of flooding in Gippsland, bit of wind.... Well, enough wind to blow over hundreds of Mountain Ash, thus making around 130 homes uninhabitable, and a further 112 severely damaged up here in the Dandenongs. ALL roads closed, no way in or out to where I live, contaminated water supply, no electricity ( mine is probably out until July 10 ), ADF have just turned up to assist. Did it rate a serious mention in the news? Did it ****. Had it been a fire we'd be front page.
The repair crews and first responders did and are still doing sterling work, most roads are now clear, but the power line work required is massive. Anyone fancy being up a travel tower with 200 foot MA trees still highly unstable and rain and wind still forecast?

Actually it got quite a bit of airplay in SA.

However, it did “hit and run” unlike fires which means once reported it becomes secondary news to the greedy media.

Thanks Mike. It's bloody cold at night I have to say. I'd fire up the genny if some bugger hadn't nicked it. I'd buy a new one if there were any to be had a pensioner could afford. On that note, now mum's gone I might try and find a job...

Thanks Mario. Water issues are sorted now for everyone. I'm lucky that I still have access to mum's house on a limited level for cooking. The estate agent lets me use their wifi each day for a bit.

The storms/flooding bit got covered for a few days here in Tassie, on Auntie.

Then something else got precedence.

Our own downpours and flooding warnings came on the scene, too.

If you do go looking for work, the hospitality industry and cropwork are two areas to try.
I hear that those with no previous experience, but with a willingness to learn, get a tryout.

I thought that, Ian and Mike. Thing is, NBN sent a couple of folk up here with a trailer which they parked near enough I guess... Free wifi, gone now. The guys manning it came from Richmond ( you may have herd of this inner city suburb ) and Greenvale which few people have heard of, and they were in the main street of Sassafras and were a: utterly amazed that such a place existed within 35k of the CBD, and b: there had been a storm. and c:, there were trees that were taller than a 4G tower, and d: people could exist without internet and d: there was a place on the planet that internet or at least wifi did not exist. I doubt they will recall this place on year on, and neither they should. It was nothing in the scheme of things...

The 'brave new world' can fail at the whim of the weather. You are correct, Ian, some folk got coverage. I still haven't seen it, because I was here and the "News" was not. I hope you recorded it...

It has to be said.. people go through things that I cannot begin to understand. I do not compare this event to their's. However, events here are worth mentioning. However, if we have a bushfire they WILL remember. Which was my point.

I have to agree. Quite a few years ago, we had pretty bad weather and lost power, caused by major line damage and lightning strikes. The local Energex crews took 5-6 days to restore it, working 24 hours a day.

In comparison, our Telstra phone/internet connection took nearly 12 months, even with assistance from the Telecommunications ombudsman's office! [bigsad]

Luckily you had the experts involved. I saw a show on last year's bush fires and a well meaning company donated a few hundred 1000 litre IBC's for people who were still without water, unfortunately they were the translucent ones which would have turned green quickly if stored outside due to u.v. light stimulating algae growth.

Seems the power back on surge took out my Mac. Well, it was old. Using a similar age MacBook I bought for not much, so back online after a fashion. Bloody thing stinks of aftershave. Do people really think that stuff smells better than they do?
