What consumption of AdBlue would you expect. Disco 5 towing caravan. Currently doing 1L per 100km. Seems excessive.

Grossly excessive. :( A 15 litre, 600 hp Cummins doesn't use that much.

Why do they need add blue anyway, most new diesel vehicles dont use the stuff, seems only a few European ones do?

SWMBOs 2020 Jeep has adblue, turning off stop start significantly reduces consumption but it only uses about a litre per 1000KM

Required on any Euro 6 engine as mentioned so to sell them in Europe you need to add the government juice. Guess they don’t buy Hiluxs over there… [emoji38]

But it could be here soon as well - it’s being considered - Australia considers move to Euro 6/VI - F&L Asia (https://www.fuelsandlubes.com/fli-article/australia-considers-move-to-euro-6-vi/)

So the vehicles don’t need to be Euro 6 in this country,at the moment, but the manufacturer has left them Euro 6,to save changing them.
Causing an inconvenience to the owners here.

Just did 12000 Km to Western Australia and back to Victoria towing a caravan. Used 1 litre of AdBlue per 120 kms. Not happy.
Anybody with any solutions.

Sounds like something is wrong with your adblue system, what vehicle?

Looking at the OP's thread as well, seems its normal for some vehicles.

Glad none of ours have the stuff, just another nuisance.

The only option is to use a vehicle that doesnt need it,there are quite a few around,ATM,but no doubt that will change.

My understanding is, as the load on the engine goes up the adblue to diesel ratio goes up.
So when towing your big van , your fuel use may go up 50-70% your adblue may go up 100-150%

That is from a 300Tdi owner😜

What would happen if you either diluted - or replaced - the AdBlu with... distilled or rain water ?

Genuine question, from one totally unfamiliar with the whole concept 7 execution

Am I correctg in assuming Ad-Blu manufacturing is tied in with urea fertilizer production? - and we in Oz only have / had ONE urea manufacturer ??

- Which makes the need to import the stuff... a Grade - A "WORRY" for National Security...[bigsad]

The urea for our AdBlue comes from China.

The sensor that detects the concentration of the adblue would prevent the engine starting due to an error in most cases. Granted any sensor could be bypassed but that would void your warranty and put you at risk of being prosecuted under anti pollution laws.

As mentioned there is a sensor that checks this - it’s called a ‘DEF Quality Sensor’ (Adblue quality sensor here) and it is an ultrasonic sensor that detects urea content - the ultrasonic waves travel faster in higher concentrations of urea so diluting it or putting something else in there will cause a fault that will either derate the engine or not allow it to run at all.

There is already smart people offering plug in modules to simulate the sensor - in trucks at least - not sure about cars yet, but the OEM’s aren’t stupid - if you disconnect and reconnect the sensor - this alone will trigger a fault which will need a visit to a dealer - and they’ll know what you’re up to. Easy enough to do right, you just need to disconnect the battery and leave it for a bit bit some truck drivers don’t do this - have seen more than one turn up at a mates workshop to get this fault cleared. I remember reading that adblue consumption should be around 3% of you diesel usage.. that was in a Cummins magazine.
Thank Christ the truck I'm currently driving doesn't use the stuff.

Moaning about adblue and ways to get around it is a first world problem. Adblue is cheap, helps save the planet and apart from being a pain in the arse to refill (in a D5) is a non-problem.

As an aside, while the D5 was a pain to refill at least the D5 tells the driver the tank level. The Touareg does not...at all. Apparently one gets a warning or two when its low but that's it.

To get the upgraded media software in the 2017 RRS we would have had to also take adblue, and lose 15litres of fuel capacity..
no regrets going with 2016 at all...

just for you people that actually like music... the sub is under/in/a part of the floor!

Ok I’ve missed something big time, when did adblue jump from 90 cpl to 187 is that due to the shotrtage of urea that we make here sell to China then run short of?
I was gob smacked when I noticed price fuelling up today, only been a year since I stopped trucking sheez [emoji15]

The urea for our AdBlue comes from China. It has been in short supply since China first slowed exports around the start of this year. Supply and demand sees prices go up until the market stabilises with consumption matching the current availability.
