Has anyone taken delivery of the MY21/22 D5 with either engine?
Would like to hear some initial thoughts on them. The numbers (kW&Nm) certainly look good but the everyday use that comes from ownership is the acid test.

Drives very well. The new straight 6 diesel has plenty of go and appears to be frugal with fuel. Only 2000km so far but averaging about 7L/100km all highway driving.

I have an MY22 HSE D300. I am an ex test driver, so very picky about cars. Most vehicle issues can be highly subjective, so bear that in mind. I have checked most issues i mention below with dealer(s) to make sure it is not operator error, but the dealers seem to know very little about this car as yet - disappointing.

I bought this for towing a van and am currently on my first trip towing a 3.2 tonne van. Car is pretty much run in and has now done ~3,000kms. Here are my initial comments, hope they help:

Car is quiet and very comfy. I am 6'2" and have the seat right back. Wheel is too far forward for comfortable driving for me, even on max extension.
Seat heaters are the best I have experienced. Range of seat adjustment is very good. Seat is a bit hard for me for long stints - I am 100kg. My passenger is 70kg and loves them.

It would be good to be able to set suspension etc to suit for everyday driving - like for offroad. I find the car is very floaty and lacks steering feel. Wife loves it.

Engine is very smooth and quiet when not under load. Massively improved throttle response compared to the V6 diesel with its horrendous turbo lag (I have had 2 of these) - almost none now. Great effort.

Excellent unloaded fuel consumption approx 7 around town, 6 on flat highway.
Car is however very thirsty when under load. Much more than I would have expected given the excellent unladen consumption. This is very disappointing. EG: First trip I am on now - towing 3.2 tonne van Mel to Sydney at 90/100km/hr uses 20l/100km and that is a very flat road. About to head up Kosciusko in a few days, so will report back.

Chimes when door open are ridiculously loud and cannot be turned off - drives me nuts when hitching up. The chime goes through the audio system so the old trick of filling the speaker with superglue is not an option.

AEB is a major fail and an accident in waiting. It is very conservative in when it operates and super aggressive when it does.
You can be on the brakes and it will decide you are not slowing enough and so it initiates warning chimes and flashing screen, plus maximum braking. Totally ridiculous. A major safety issue IMO. Be prepared to be rear ended - already caused two big incidents for me with other vehicles having to take emergency evasion.
Can be turned off thankfully but you must do that every time the ignition is turned on.
Warnings of flashing screen and chimes happen for me relatively often without the emergency braking, just driving normally. Never had this issue before and I have had and tested many cars with AEB.
Problem with AEB for all OEMs is that it can only react to what info it can access, which is far less that that which a driver has access to. So the algorithms are very important to not cause issues. Every car I have driven with AEB has got it pretty right. This one is very wrong. I have not spoken to a dealer about this issue so do not know if it can be fixed.

Foot operated rear boot opens when you walk nearby and sometimes not when you want it to. Frustrating but a handy feature.

Brakes are very spongy but effective. See what happens on the way down Kosciusko.

Screen is a is good size and resolution, but very poorly used:
Search function takes up half the screen, so mapping is effectively only a half of the screen when this is not minimised (default is search open).
This is effectively still the case even when search is minimised as the vehicle location is fixed at half way between the left half of the screen because the right half is reserved for the search function, so 25% of the way from the LHS of the screen.
So when you have full screen 25% is to the left of the car on screen location and 75% to the right.
So if you are on a road that turns left there is little room to see what is happening in that direction.
There is an automatic assumption that you want to search whenever you use the nav screen, so each time it nav is opened you need to kill the search function to get full screen.
If you use the auto function (default screen resolution) it is not much use on rural trips as you cannot zoom out to see nearby towns etc without setting up manually. If you use your fingers (pinch, etc) to zoom in out out or in it will stay for a bit but then default again.
To set manually can take a number of key strokes and a stretch across to the left side of the screen.
However, when you set this manually there is a loss of functionality with respect to intersection zooming.
Basically the system works fine in town, but not so good on a trip where you want to see a far more zoomed out map.
I find that turn notifications are too close to the actual turns, so can't be relied on to give sufficient warning.
Rerouting however is very good - fast and accurate.

My car has a horrendous vibration in 6,7, 8th gears when under any sort of load whilst towing. In 7th in particular the whole car shakes quite violently, even with very light throttle. The level of throttle does not affect it - just the fact that there is any load at all. As soon as the load is off it is fine.
It is very minor when no load.
Dealers have told me this is not something they have heard about, so maybe just mine. Because it is not there to any extent when not towing dealers have said they will not be able to replicate so cannot address! I have not taken this further, but will when I get back to Melbourne.

I am a bit of an audiophile, so I find the stereo awful.
If using music from a USB storage device, the system has trouble recognising the ID3 tags so you do not get images, etc. Very clunky as well.
I use an iPhone via USB you get a much better sound and get the ID3 tag info, but still quite poor sound for a car of this price.
The surround system is not set up correctly so there is a phase issue between speakers that results in an echo for nearly all music. If set to stereo only, the sound is very poor. Makes it almost unusable for me, but others not into quality music find it OK.

Hope this helps - worth checking the issues I mention yourself to see if they matter for you.

Hows the body flex in them nowadays?

Offroad the earlier D5s move quite a bit. One of the reasons making rigid items like sliders is problematic as it changes the rigidity of the structure and can be an issue.

Thanks Fast for your comprehensive comments. I am very much in the same situation and while the heart wants a D5, the head is not convinced that it will be the vehicle I need. Just returned from 6 months and 22,000+ km around the NW of WA, the D4 returned a calculated 16.5l/100km average for the trip, I tow a similar sized van at 90~95kph conditions depending so I was very happy with the result. I am not overly concerned about the actual fuel use, more about the range and so at the 20l/100km your range is 350km or so, which is similar to me anyway. What happens to your ad-blu consumption when you are towing, any idea?
You hit on one of the things that concerns me about the 5, that being not having the ability to turn some of those annoying "driver assistance" features off but I guess that's the way of it.

Would like to know what model you have and if you know an actual weight, total and front/rear split.

I can't use music from a USB stick if it has any more that say 100 songs on it. If I do the infotainment locks up, reboots and otherwise misbehaves. I've tired different sticks, capacities, stick and file formats, folder structures, tagging, naming, you name it. Went to JLR for help who as usual were useless and uninterested. Countless hours spent researching and trying to find a work around with no luck.

So I'm stuck with wired Android Auto. There is an appreciable drop in quality/range if you compare USB vs phone stored songs. Ditto Spotify. Sound is still good but I'd say its 80% of that from the USB or CD.

This could be a show stopper for my 2022 upgrade.

We all hear differently, so please don't just go by my comments - best to test thoroughly yourself to see if you are OK with it or can find a way to make it so. Last car I had i found changing to AIFF files and replacing the amp with Audison (very configurable) and speakers with Focal allowed me to keep using the OEM head unit and therefore the controls. I have not had this long enough to look into a fix as yet.
