View Full Version : Td5 Automatic Discovery 2a suddenly running rough and no top-end power

Hi,

I'm in a bit of a situation with my 2003 Discovery 2 Td5 auto. We drove down here to Warrnambool on Thursday night to my partner's house, about 300 k journey, all fine.

Problem came when went to shops next evening (for essential items), engine started ok, first click, but appeared a bit rough. On the road it takes off ok, but just bogs down at about 40kmh, especially if there's a hill in sight. No check-engine, no amigos, nothing flashing. Bit of a top-end rattle, but that seems to come and go.

This is a well-maintained almost 300k car that's just been serviced.

Random thoughts

1. It was very rainy when driving down here. Is there anywhere worth checking for water ingress? Parked wet in Tas's garage.

That's it really.

Does anyone on here have any suggestions on a fix, or even a suggestion for someone to take it to down here (Warrnambool Vic).

If we get out of lockdown, we need to get back to Castlemaine, and I'm not confident it's going to make it.

Bad fuel, fuel filter blocking, maf sensor, water in air filter, injector washers, oil in ecu plug.
Just thinking out loud

Just off the top of my head check the three little hoses on the boost solenoid, does disconnecting the MAF make any difference. What about the condition of the air filter? Are the boost hoses in good condition ? Not delaminating ?

As I say, that’s just off the top of my head. Others will have more, and possibly better, ideas.

Ok f it’s just been serviced, did the o ring come off with old fuel filter, when new one fitted, so only one o ring not 2 or is the fuel filter tight and not sucking air as well

Does it rev OK in neutral? If not, look at fuel pump.

Chaps, thanks heaps for the suggestions

Engine loom replaced recently, and ECU and plug carefully cleaned out with no further problems, but I'll start looking at the other suggestions.

OK, hands up, who said MAF sensor? Well done!

Unplugged that and the engine revs again, nasty noise and silliness gone. Didn't try a road test, but I'm sure it's WAY better. Would n't rev over 2500 rpm (in N) previouisly,

I'm assuming that the ECU has a base map for airflow based on the engine speed, and that this is what it runs from when the MAF is disconnected? Can I drive home like this is the question?

Airfilter was nice and dry inside, did check there too. Hoses and connectors as suggested all looked ok too.

My MAF has been open circuit for ages. Although I don't know how the car would go with it working, the engine runs well enough with it disconnected, with only perhaps a hint of hesitation around the 3000 rpm mark.

It'll drive fine with the MAF disconnected. Roverlord supply reliable, new MAFs, beware of cheap Chinese "will fit/same as" rubbish.

Try to go for a drive if you can, if you can't due to lock down , then partially warm it up for a couple of minutes then do a stall test ( should be around 2800 rpm ) this will go some way to replicating actual load on the engine.

Don't know what part of Warrnambool you are on but a quick run on Caramut rd or Hopkins rd and see if it goes ok Hopkins Rd has a good hill to test if it will go under load.

Sounds a bit like when a turbo hose delaminates internally in a D1. Not sure if D2’s are the same.

Oh dear, went for a test drive to exercise by the beach, its still a basket case. Seems to be getting worse if anything. Took 3 tries to start coming home, starts and dies. No lights on dash, no warnings, all looks normal. Might check the the hoses next as suggested. Thanks, Chris

If it is, it will be the hose out of the turbo heading to the intercooler.

As a get you home job, just stripe the insides out of it and refit it. Thats only as a get you home fix though.

check if you can hear any fuel pump noise with ignition on engine off.

Yes, my money is on the in tank fuel pump.

The injector pumps will pull up enough fuel to idle the engine and run under low load. One of my friends was able to travel slowly on a dirt road, as soon as he got on the bitumen the car lost power. Changed the in tank pump and problem was sorted.

It is a job that can be done at home.

Yes, sadly fuel pump was the answer, and indeed there was no fuel pump noise. Actually turned to a no-start and had to be towed. Of course I'm away from home with no manual or tools and busy with work.

Big thank you to AB Auto's in Warrnambool for correct diagnosis and repair, would definitely use them again if I'm down this way with a problem.

Might change the injector seals as a preventative measure when I get home.

The horrible rattly sound is gone now, and the engine is sooo much smoother under part and trailing throttle.
