View Full Version : Interchangeability of swivel hubs

Hi all, not sure about posting in S2a or S3, as it concerns both. I am looking at swapping out the swivel/half-shaft/axle assemblies on the front Rover diff of my ex-military S3 109 (2.6 with the wider 11 inch brakes) with a set from a 1967 S2a 109 (2.25 with the standard 11 inch brakes) that I dismantled a few years ago. From my reading of the parts manual, and physical inspection, it appears that they are essentially the same with the exception of the brake backplates, the brake union mount above the seal retainer on the S3, and the fact that the S2a units have free wheeling hubs fitted (which I might keep on them). So I am thinking I just need to swap the backplates over so I can remount the wider 11 inch brakes and associated equipment, and it should be ok to fit onto the S3.

I just wanted to check with our experts here whether this is indeed correct, or whether there are some other nuances of the ex-military/1 ton setup that I need to be aware of.

Thanks as always [emoji106]

Should be a straight swap as you thought - move all the brakes across but the other bits are the same.

Hello from Brisbane.

That’s essentially the present set up on my Series 3 88”.

It has swivels, housings etc from a 2A 109” and brake backing plates from an ex-Army 109” 6 cylinder. Drums, cylinders, shoes etc are NOS for the wider 11” setup.

Cheers,

Neil
