Hey guys,

Got a disco 3 V6 4.0 with 196k. Started it up the other morning and had a whirring sound. Seemed to be coming from the alternator or idler pulley. Before I could suss it out completely, I had to turn the car off to tend to the kids. Came back 5min later to kick it over again and the car is completely dead... No electrical activity whatsoever. Battery is fine.

Any advice of where to start looking? Thanks

My disco is the same with 140k on the clock. Do you have any alarm warnings on the dash.
Mine did. Itsaid crank angle sensor failure. It was that and the stater motor. There was a volt drop problem, starter motor was u/s. Changed both , has never ran better. Starter moter was short of a grand. Hope yours isnt .

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your reply. No warnings except the Air Suspension which I'm going to service the compressor
Car was running great the day before. Started it up and heard the noise. Stumped on why it would start fine then 5min later, completely dead with the battery still fine.

Cheers, Leigh

That was the same with mine. Turn the key and a click only once. Then no click. Was running fine before that. I must abmit, the engine has never started so quickly in it's life.

Check the earth wire from engine to battery, better still put a wire from the negative terminal of the battery to somewhere on the engine and try again. Check battery voltage, should be 12.4 volts just sitting there and around 14.4 when just started and running.

Noise could be idler pulley or alternator bearing.
