A person known to the police and under active surveillance and followed by the STG committed a terror attack in a shopping mall in Auckland this afternoon. He was shot and killed within 60 seconds of starting the attack but was able to stab six people, three critically.

Commiserations to the six injured victims, but no sorrow for one less terrorist roaming the earth.

How much did it cost to have this nutter under 24hr surveillance? Why not just ship them back to where they came from if they're deemed to be a risk? Or bang them up somewhere secure they can only damage each other.
I personally couldn't care less if their own lives are at risk back where they came from, so are innocent peoples lives by allowing them to wander the streets.
Deepest commiserations to those injured, sheer luck no one was killed except the perp himself and good on the cops for doing it.

The reason he was out was because the authorities did not have enough evidence to convince a court to lock him up, hence the surveillance detail. Also, while the PM said he was a Sri Lankan citizen I have seen other reports that he was a refugee from Sri Lanka in the 2000s and is now a NZ citizen so cannot be deported.
I think when the full story comes out on this, it will be interesting to see the conflict between the rights of the general population to be protected and the rights of an individual and how the judiciary has to balance the two and work within the laws of the country.
Yes the guy should have been locked up with without convincing evidence I think the solution that the NZ authorities came up with with constant surveillance is a pragmatic solution that despite the 6 injured actually worked.
I think the NZ authorities are to be congratulated.

From the footage they showed on the news which was limited, it was good to hear the police decide that 1 shot wasn’t enough for this terrorist, they gave him a good does of lead poisoning from the sounds of how many shots got fired.
I can only wonder if it was in this country if they would have been under some form of punishment for firing more than once

The cops that shot him are the ones who get my tick of approval. Well done to them.

Not often that I praise the Oz government...but they deport their garbage....whereas here in NZ we namby-pamby them, and this is the result. They have known of his terrorist leanings, since at least 2016. Poor ol police have had to waste resources tailing him...and wait until he did something like this before he was dealt with. Good work NZ police.

We would only be able to deport him under a specific set of circumstances with a record. Sounds like NZ didn't have enough evidence.
