Felt it at my place. House was shaking like a bowl of jelly.
At first I was wondering what was going on. By the time I realised what it was, I started heading for the door it stopped before I got outside.
I reckon it lasted about 10 to 15 seconds.
6 on Richter scale.

There's no earthquake code that I'm aware of - the Mornington Peninsula gets regular small quakes so perhaps they have some requirements?

Imagine if you had a D2 with ACE and you were doing ACE testing with nanocom.
There is a test that says to keep clear of vehicle as it can violently rock from side to side.
How would it be if you hit the "Test ACE" button at the time the quake hit.

You'd better approach NDIS for a Surplus Ejector Seat from a Mirage, (one press of the button or pull of the cable) & he'd beat you out of the house. Problem is you'd have to retrieve him from 3 blocks away sitting on a chimney. He'd make a nice hole in the roof though.

Apparently, post 1989, taller buildings in Melbourne have to be earthquake resistant, but some of those buildings in Southbank had pretty dodgy construction so it wouldn't surprise me if some of the concrete was sub-par.

I have worked there and when went outside on the roof top of these buildings just noise and creaking the wind blowing on them makes wonder what it going to be like in an earth quake these were built .

I am pretty certain those buildings would be OK in most earthquakes - they might not have been designed to withstand earthquakes, but they are designed to withstand wind, and with that height and known maximum winds in the area, I doubt there is any possibility of their falling. Moving, yes, and probably shed a bit of cladding, yes, but fall over? I doubt it.

I wouldn't be so sure about that - depending on the foundations and soil they can fall over and some of the earthquake engineered buildings in Kobe stayed up but had entire floors squashed flat.

Earthquake engineered buildings are only designed to a maximum size quake, same as wind loading is designed to a maximum wind. Floors squashed flat suggests that the ground acceleration exceeded the design parameters.

Floors squashed flat suggests that the ground acceleration exceeded the design parameters.
There were a couple of reasons, mostly to do with inadequate reinforcing or a change in construction method in the building itself.

Of course, another factor is how closely buildings adhere to their design when actually being built. But that article points out that the older building code was inadequate. It also points out the major effect of the properties of the subsoil on ground movement in an earthquake (the Christchurch quake showed this up dramatically).

Some clients of mine in Tokyo had part of a subway station under their 20 storey building - their engineers told them that in a really big earthquake their building would stay upright but would punch down into the subway station in one piece and they'd be exiting to street level from the second or third floor.
The Fukushima earthquake was about 400 km north of Tokyo Disneyland but it still destroyed their carparks and it took them months to reopen. Tokyo Disneyland built on reclaimed land that used to part of Tokyo Bay and is close to a major fault line that runs across Tokyo Bay, so it is in fact a sketchy place to have an amusement park.
When I lived in Tokyo I had serious gear to prepare for a bad earthquake - as part of my job I got to read the reports on what was expected to happen if a big one hit Tokyo, and the reports on what had happened at Kobe - but most people I spoke to (both Japanese and expats) thought that I was a lunatic: that wasn't the case after Fukushima, in fact a lot of expats left permanently. In the end, one of the reasons we left Japan was my concern about being in Tokyo if a big earthquake hit, in particular that my kids were scattered around the city at different schools and we might not be able to get everyone to safety. My wife thought that I was worrying too much, but when we were watching the tsunami and what was happening in Tokyo and when Fukushima radiation cloud looked like it was about to drift across Tokyo (which would've particularly affected kids) she actually said that she was grateful that I'd been so worried.

When were in a Tokyo hotel one morning a quake hit we were in bed at the time and as the building shook , it did come to my mind there was 20 floors of concrete was above our heads. It was a tad unnerving. Traveling on the extensive under ground and hurtling along at great speed on the Shinkansen it crossed my mind a couple of times, even though they have safety measures like the train will stop, but the thought of a city falling on top of the trains was a something you don't want to think about.
We visited a temple and there was this big buddha up on a hill, and we read about it being knocked by a tsunami hundreds of years ago, and i though that must of been one mother of a wave to get all the way there, and walking long the local street there were signs directing you to the escape routes in case of tsunami.

Now why would you quote an overseas website rather than the Australian one? Earthquakes@GA (https://earthquakes.ga.gov.au/) (click on the big red -> orange -> yellow blob on the SA border.
1st (only) site that came up when I googled it that had information about the earthquake [emoji1531][emoji1531]

Traveling on the extensive under ground .... it crossed my mind a couple of times, even though they have safety measures like the train will stop, but the thought of a city falling on top of the trains was a something you don't want to think about.
Yes, counterintuitively if a big quake hits and you're in the subways you're probably better off staying down there, because:
1. the subway exits all narrow down and are serious crush points when 10,000 people try to exit at once;
2. there'd be glass, AC units and all sorts of other stuff crashing to the ground at street level;
3. the deeper you are the less severe the earth movement.
We visited a temple and there was this big buddha up on a hill, and we read about it being knocked by a tsunami hundreds of years ago, and i though that must of been one mother of a wave to get all the way there
Sounds like the Daibutsu (Big Buddha) at Kamakura that used to have a huge temple around it but which got washed away by a tsunami. And, yeah, it's a long way from the beach.
