Hi All,

I just replaced the head unit in my Defender (Puma). The factory Alpine unit stopped talking to my phone so I replaced with a new (Alpine) unit. I ended up doing a pretty much like for like swap but was tossing up whether to put in a head unit without a CD player. The Alpine unit without the CD was only about $40 cheaper so not sheep stations but I ended up getting the CD. I figured the next buyer would probably want one and in hindsight having CD will be useful out of phone range (no Spotify!!).

I also figured the majority of users on this forum would vote for CD - am I right?

Probably good to have, but I never use mine. I dont even take CD's. I have my music on my phone which then plays via bluetooth - far easier than taking and scratching CDs.

CDs, so last week! [wink11]
Mine still has a tape player. [bighmmm]

Yeah, people don't buy CD's anymore do they? I would have thought that bought music (not streamed) is mostly downloaded anyway these days.

I reckon the more options the better, as long as the unit has Bluetooth as well as CD.

Spotify download and off line is my tip. Add if you can put google or apple play in the unit you then get to say what you want which really works some of the time and is as funny as the rest of the time. I have a CD stack in my old RIP and new D3. It is not used at all really. Plug my phone in the AUX cable ( In the back of my D3) and set my phone to car mode listen to me. My phone is a cheaper four year old at least one not lardy dah version at all.

I think the family spoitify deal makes CDs totally redundant and any strange musical impulse does not need delayed gratification. It also works when I am running, riding and working in the garage and keeps the kids all happy.

Note I think Spoitify maybe one of those Off shore tax dodgers!!!

Yours have 8 track as well? [emoji41]

CD in a 4wd is generally asking for trouble. The mechanisms get thumped and the dust kills them.

Mechless BT / USB / CarPlay / Auto is the way forward.

Brisk acceleration can make CD's skip as well, or so I'm informed by a mechanic mate that worked on BMW M3 and took it for a "test" drive!

Brisk acceleration? Never struck that issue with a Td5. [bigrolf]
I think USB input and Bluetooth are essential, on a new unit.

post my Spotify comment I have to add it is 5 for $2 for CDs in far out WA on my trip back last time. I will have to flash them up tomorrow when I do have a reason to drive the Disco picking up a load at 5am. [thumbsupbig] One CD I grabbed was the BIG O. Roy was cool yet once per decade is almost enough [bigrolf]

Even tho I got the CD option myself, had I had the option of CD or no CD, I'd have gone no CD(even at the same price point!).

For 'fixed music' ie. not wirelessly connected like Bt or carploy and what not .. I use a USB drive, all music has been converted from CD to MP3 or whatever format(can't remember) and stuck on the thumbdrive .. sits in the glovebox and if I ever need to add any more easy to do.

So I would vote for saving the $40 and no CD.

My vehicle CD player has had precisely 1 disc put in to test it - 10 years ago.

We don’t even have a device capable of playing a cd in our house. Or DVD, BluRay, audio cassette, VCR. We do ironically have a Turntable.

Love my CD collection of several hundred CD's.
But for the car it's a memory stick with MP3 from ripped CD's.
A lot less room.

Actually something I miss .. a tape player.
I have a few old tapes I've wanted to get into digital format for years.

Yeah, similar here no old timer audio players other than the bluray and DVD drives in the PC tower .. and they were hand-me-downs from previous builds.

The BR drive actually saved my bacon last week.
PC failed to boot .. and failed again and again .. etc.

I'd been having some instability, which I reckon may have been the graphics card(Nvidia Geforce 960) .. but just a guess.
I know it wasn't W10, as I'd have crashes whilst booting up .. so ..

anyhow long story short .. loaded up a USB boot recovery drive .. waited for boot .. no go! Wha! .. reboot, make sure USB set to first boot .. nothing! Bugga .. now what.

Ah! .. try the W10 DVD .. dvd set to first boot .. [thumbsupbig]

Whist I was at it re-installing W10 again, I thought it would be a good idea to remove the ASUS graphics card and install a spare GTX1660 I had from sons PC .. which fixed both instability AND booting from USB.

Sometimes handy to have old tech still around.

.. now... where to get this tape player which I've had in mind to get for the past 10 years or so.

I'd like a USB reader that fits into a cassette slot, similar to the CD to tape converters that used to be available.

I had one of those CD to Tape adapter things.
Worked well for a while .. until I got the chance to use it on our lovely outback tracks.
(ex) missus and I went on a 3 week trip up the centre, and the walkman like CD player we had was utterly useless. I had it on a flexi stalk thing bolted to the centre console so it had a good amount of flex to soak a bump. But not!

Ian, a direct USB to tape can't really happen. USB drives are dumb devices and need a host device to make them work.
So it would have to be a semi intelligent audio player type thing .. think iPod or MP3 type player that would allow USB drive connectivity and also have an operating system to be able to host the USB drive thing too.

You could do it with a Phone by connecting the tape player adapter to the audio jack of the phone.

I went mechless with my android head unit, 32gig on board storage, 2 usb ports for flashdrives or SSD HDD or bluetooth streaming from my phone.
Will never use CDs again, even at home i have digitized most of my discs and play them via XBMC on a modded original xbox.

Arthur, the smarts could be built into the cassette section. A USB stick is just a different shaped storage device, in essence no different to a CD.

Well that was an interesting google search....

The term crossdressing has replaced transvestism in common use and refers to persons who dress in clothing of the opposite gender but do not live full time in that gender. Crossdressing may or may not have an erotic component.

The best estimate of the incidence of fetishistic cross-dressing comes from Langstrom & Zucker (2005). A representative sample of 2450 Swedish men and women, as part of a broader study of sexual attitudes and lifestyles, were asked ‘Have you ever dressed in clothes pertaining to the opposite sex and become sexually aroused by this?’ Positive answers were given by 2.8% of men and 0.4% of women. However, we do not know how many of these individuals repeated this behaviour and, if so, over what period of time.

There is another reason to have a CD player. :)

You can buy a phone/GPS holder that fits in the CD slot.

In some vehicles it is quite a convenient place (maybe even the only place) to mount the phone or GPS.

That would be somewhat inconvenient, my CD is under the seat.

I still use CD's. If I was looking to buy a car and there were two identical cars with the only difference being a CD player it would be a deal breaker.

Far easier IMO to chuck in a CD, or 6 if you have the capability, than fiddling around with a phone trying to find music.

Also the phone can't be touched whilst driving unless in a commercial made holder.

Try trying to select anything on a touch phone, mounted in a cradle on a cab over Kenworth truck on the Cunningham highway.

I also have voice control. Mines called the wife. "Hey love, chuck another CD in will ya"

I never get "say a command" "sorry I do not know this" "please say a command"
