G'Day All,
wondering if anyone else has had an issue with their Arnott Mk3 Air Bags. One of my rears with only about 500 kms failed this arvo while out on a fairly gentle off road run. Had my wife and another friend and her little one on board so wasn't doing anything too challenging.

My Rangie has a 2" lift kit (same as Keithy Wager's) with plus 2" Terra Firma adjustable shockers. Have had it fully articulated prior with no stretching of air bags.174294174295

Attached a couple of pics. The bag was manufactured in July 2019 so not old. I have a spare new one same mfr date however decided to fit a spare Chinese one in case there was a bad batch from Arnott.
I'll be interested to hear any comments.

Mine are a tad bit older but I have had the 2" lift since the last batch was produced and never had any problem. It seems like there might be a problem with the crimp. I reckon arnott will reseat them for you?

Cheers,

G’day mate,

I’ve worked on a few P38’s that have experienced this issue with the Arnott airbags - both lifted and standard height vehicles have done it. Contact Arnott and the will likely point you to 3 Point Classic (their Australian Arnott dealer).

I’m weary of 3 point classic as they’ve delivered me 3 Gen III airbags (for customers vehicles) and all have had the issue you have.

I hope they sort it for you mate!

Cheers
Keithy

Thanks Keithy,
Yes well I have contacted Arnott to see what they say but no response as yet. Not expecting warranty but would like to know if they can re-band them correctly. I've fitted a Chinese Mk3 and the upper sealing band is way stronger and better fitted. Just chasing some reliability before heading too far from home and the hoist. :)

HI

I just fitted one of those knockoffs with the aluminium base and the top piston blew out before I had chance to even drive.

It seems this top joint with the ring clamp is a not so good piece of engineering

I'm think luck has a lot to do with it. I have a Chinese unit in there now and so far no issues.

Of course no response from Arnott on the other one.

I carry spares but I'm not of an age where doing a replacement in the bush is at all appealing.

I emailed maxspeeding rods to see what they say, the bags do have a 2 year warranty

I too am getting a little old for roadside swaps!

Hey mate.

I had a similar issue with my rear Arnott 3s. The top plastic bracket blew out after hitting an extremely deep pothole at speed. I wish I still had the photos of the damage. I was amazed that the bag itself didn't pop.

I ended up replacing them with Arnott 2 bags, as that was all I could get in short notice before embarking on my WA trip. Must say the Arnott 2s apart from the fact they got plastic pistons instead of metal ones didn't make any difference to the ride and handling. I still have them on and probably saved around $400 in the purchase price.
