I have gone back through the posts on this forum to find details about the Series 1 we got last week and I am confused. The numbers I have on the ID plate and engine block don’t match what I read in past posts by members who I am sure have a far better knowledge of the subject. The past owner of the vehicle purchased it second hand fro a local garage and the vehicle was known to the last owner as coming from his old neighbours farm, his knowledge of the vehicle was that all components were original but the engine number is certainly different from the examples in the forum records. Can someone help identify what we have please. I have included the photos of the car number and engine number this motor has the filter under the inlet manifold drivers side.

Can you post the car No. please - I can't read a couple of the digits .

Or you can enter them yourself into Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands (https://www.clifton.nl/index.html?calvin.html)

It looks like 113801247 - if so

1 Type: Land Rover

13 Model: Land Rover, Series I

Body type: Basic

Wheel base: 88in (Short Wheel Base

Engine: Petrol

Destination: Right-hand drive (RHD), completely knocked down (CKD)

8 Model year: 1958

Serial number - 01247

That engine number does not seem to tie in though.
PS Actually that engine number does tie in - my 57 (56 build) is 111701549 so the the listed engine number of 111807889 would tie in for a 58 MY (that is what the 8 in the number means - so engine is a 2 litre spread bore.

The numbers are L-R
Car/Chassis.....Engine.....Gearbox.....Front axle.....Rear axle
The first 4 digits are the important numbers. The last 5 digits are the serial numbers They don't match and can be up to a few hundred numbers apart.
Your car no 11380.... and engine no 111807...appears to be for a Series 1 58 SWB 88" CKD. (Australian assembled, arrived here in kit form).

It's not really knowledge, it's just a matter knowing where to look things up.
