Not another Tyre Thread

Quick question. Need to replace or change my 19" tyres. I've been running the Maxxis AT980 Bravo for the last 5+ years .Only had one flat in that time. Overall a good all round tyre, bit noisier than the OEM, however, not getting a huge distance of of them.

I have 18" Nittos on Moab rims for more remote travel, but wanted to keep the 19" for general running around and blacktop travel. The existing Maxxis 980's are getting near end of life, so, I've come down to probably the following 3.

1) Stick with Maxxis 980's
2) Pirelli Scorpion ATR
3) Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus

Opinions? Anything else I haven't thought of? Whatever I get I'll get 5 or 6 of them. I think the AT+ will be the most pricey but seem to have had some good comments on the forum.

I got the Duratrac, swapping from Maxxis 980 and couldn’t be happier. The Maxxis were much noisier. Duratrac have an aggressive enough pattern for me and drive well.

Edit: but if you have other rims, I’d get some HT spec tyres and enjoy peace around town and better fuel economy to boot

I agree. If I had 2 sets of tyres I’d be keeping the 19’s as straight on road tyres

Understand the logic, but for me I need the 19" "road" tyres to be capable of driving over wet grass in steepish paddocks or on slippery tracks. I might do this one or two days in six months. So I use Pirelli Scorpion AT+ 255x55x19. I find them great on road. Quiet and secure in the wet. Could use them in serious off-road stuff, but bulging sidewalls scare the bejeezes out of me. It's easy enough to split an LT sidewall as it is. For an off-road trip I change to Compomotives with Kuhmo MT51 265x60x18. With any luck I'll be dusting them off and fitting them in a few days!

Exactly my situation. I can understand others who might live in the city and would be happy to run Road type tyres on their 19" and keep the AT's or Muddies for going on the odd 4WD track or when touring. However, I live in the bush on a property. I have to drive on rocky tracks often, it snows where I live and I often tow the caravan. I genuinely believe that a more LT construction, (without going overboard) is appropriate for my 19". I'm not going to change all my tyres over to the 18" because I have to drive around the property or tow the van.

I will only be using the 18" with the Nittos when doing very remote travel. (If it wasn't for Covid I would have towed the van across the Great Central Highway and probably taken the D4 up the Gibb, no van though). I need 19" that are not simply a highway construction. The Scorpion AT+ are on my short list, but the comment from DiscoJeffster made me think about the Duratrac's.

When I do really remote stuff I carry a second spare. I only have 5 of the 18" so would carry one of the 19" as a second spare as they end up the same rolling diameter as the 18". Price I got on the Scorpion AT+ was $420 each. Can get Duratrac's for $390. Overall, the Maxxis Bravos have been great, only one puncture in 5 years, but not getting great mileage out of them. So thanks for your thoughts.

Running Maxxis 980s atm, I would pick the Duratracs over these any day, second choice would be the Pirellis AT+.

Can't fault the 980s, best sidewall ply rating in class and super tough tyre, wearing well. Bit noisy and once worn are twitchy in the wet, in that no progressive slip, bit digital that way.

My 980s are at 50% worn now and I prefer my HT set of rims in the rain.

No mention for the 19" Cooper Zeon LTZ's? Had them for 5 years now - very low road noise, predominantly had them on HT - but did take them for a spin on Fraser Island (away from beach highways) and they were great. Big fan!

I found they had paper thin sidewalls after slicing one open on a rock. I agree they were nice on the road.

I used to run Duratracs but found the sidewalls a little too weak. Never had a tread puncture but got a slow leak from a sidewall after some rather harsh terrain and lost faith in them. Switched to the Maxxis Bravos and have found them to be excellent in all conidtions and the LT rating gives me more confidence. My 6th wheel when remote touring is just a Goodyear Wrangler (original spare). I'll be staying with the Maxxis (I don't mind the extra road noise when new)

I'll give a vote to option 3 for tyre choice!

Recently (about 10K ago) fitted the Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus's on my D4! Can recommend these for sure - quietest AT tyre I've ever had and seem good all-round and especially in the wet too! Paid $1382(inc) for 4 tyres and wheel alignment (and disposal fee included) from local Tyrepower. :thumbsup:
