Front Wheel Hub

I tell you i'm getting used to being shocked :eek: about the prices for spare parts with landrovers NOT ;) !!!

Now that i've calmed down i need a bit of help, i have a noticeable noise coming from the front of the car, it gets more noticeable when i turn left and is quite loud on the freeway. So i'm guess it's the left front wheel hub assembly? 2 questions.
1. Can anybody point me in the right direction for a replacement hub other than Landrover in Brisbane, as i've been quoted $500.00 DOES THIS SOUND RIGHT !!!
2. How easy is it to replace the whole hub (i've done wheel bearings before but **** not a whole hub assembly) or do they call it that to scare people off!!

What Land Rover do you have? What is your VIN (SALL.....)?

You can do it quite easily yourself. I would remove the axle and see if the CV joint is the problem,give it a cleanup and check the condition of the balls for chipping, discolouration etc. I downloaded a few pages from Difflock.com about 18mths ago when I refurbished my hubs, the info was excellent with colour photos as well.
Once you find what the problem is, shop around for prices.

i'm no expert but have had my front hubs off to replace a cv, bearing, swivel pin bearing etc

if you can servce your wheel bearings than you have the skills to replace the hub, well setting up the pre-load on the swivel bearing takes a bit of work, somebody will know the proper way/have the instruction to set it up

i'm guessing you wont need to replace the hub (they don't really ware out) unless it has been damaged, its more likely going to be wheel bearings, swivel pins bearings or cv's making the noise

have you tried putting your hands on the top of the wheel and push/pulled to see if there is any movement this would indicate wheel bearings or maybe swivel pins

i had the brake caliper shroud come loose which made a heap of noise, i welded it up no more noise

yuo might want to put her apart before buying a new hub

where bouts in brizzy are you, i use mr automotive 'redcliffe' from most things there prices are reasonable along with they are just up the road

Sharpie has a Series II Disco.

The hub & bearings are supplied as an assembly from LR & includes the ABS wheel speed sensor. Part # TAY100060.
Retail price should be around $440. They used to be over $1000 a few years ago.

I wonder if anyone has gone to the trouble of replacing the bearing(s) in these hubs yet ?

I would check for parts pricing in the UK - www.lrdirect.com.au (http://www.lrdirect.com.au) are very good.

I recently had a front hub replaced - LR quoted around $400 for the part, Range-Rov in Melbourne ((03) 9874-3111) has an alternate for around $230 as it doesn't include the ABS sensor which in my case was perfectly ok.

Do a search on the Outer Limits forum. Only a few weeks ago a KIWI posted the part number for the wheel bearing. Apparently you CAN get the bearings but you need a 20 tonne press to replace them.
This was in response to my answering a question re 38A hubs that you had to buy the whole unit. Learn something every day.
