The final straw was the 2019 floods, which deposited millions of tons of silt that needs to be dredged. The final export from the Century mine in 2016 meant dredging stopped, and only one live cattle ship has the draught to use the port. The alternatives are shipping cattle to Townsville, or getting them to Darwin, via Cloncurry. Infrastructure needs a huge upgrade for this to be financially viable.

wonder how dredging costs in Karumba compare to extra freight charges to Townsville , especially if a number of graziers commit to exporting from Karumba.

Building purpose built shallow draught vessels for live export was thought about, because no matter what you do, Karumba is and always will be a shallow water port. The problem has been lately guaranteeing cattle numbers to make the building and maintaining such ships viable. It just doesn't stack up, no matter which way you look at it, without the money from the mine.
