D4 TDV6 2015 with 60k km on the clock
Had oil leak and just been told it’s going to cost $3,985 (incl 13hrs labor) to replace the cracked valve covers - Left & Right while they’re at it..
Does this sound about right..?

Valve covers? Intake manifolds more likely. It would concern me that both have failed at the same time, unless the workshop is advising that both should be replaced together. Sounds about right for dealer pricing, but I'd suggest getting a good Indy to advise. 60,000km seems far too early to me unless the car has done predominantly short city trips.

60k sounds far too early for inlet manifolds.
Definitely best to to both at same time, but suggest you get a second opinion to confirm it is the problem.

Correct - both inlet manifolds and M.R doing it.
They said that the oil leak is around them and offered me the choice of just replacing gaskets or do the the inlet manifolds. As it’s $2k just for labour I decided to do it all while there in there - just wasn’t expecting quite that size bill..
Interesting, they also said that I had under 4L of oil in the sump but car was serviced about 600km ago with oil changed. They don’t think the oil leak (drip) would account for all that oil loss and that it’s not cracked & blowing into the turbo - so said it might be an internal crack of some sort?

Um, seems the "service" didn't fill er up enough. I'd be wanting my money back. 2k for both manifolds is a bit steep, I think I paid 1500 for mine, replaced both.

It’s not an impossible DIY if you’re handy. Time consuming and fiddle yes. There’s a guy on YouTube does it in his driveway over a weekend. Reuse the injector fittings is key. Everyone seems to get away with this.

Manifolds, valve covers are one and the same, I removed and refitted mine (2.7) in my driveway when my tensioner failed and I did a minor rebuild.
For 4k I'd be doing them myself.

I would be after a second opinion. I've never heard of them leaking before. The price seems unfair, but them again maybe they are using genuine manifolds from Aus.

And on that note, has anyone fitted non-genuine manifolds?
There is quite a price difference.
Presumably the trick is to buy the ones which are supplied to LR and which they sell on as genuine.

I had mine changed out at 270,000 with genuine ones by my indi. Whilst in there a new oil pump, coolant manifold, oil cooler, water pump, belts and starter motor. The injector seats were re machined. I have done a further 10,000km since and running sweet.
over the years I have replaced all suspension struts, LCA’s three times, new compressor and other minor items. This has been more for reliability and preemptive maintenance than anything as I do 98% country miles and a flatbed ride is VERY expensive. That said it is still an absolute joy to drive long distances compared to a ZD30 Patrol I used to have. (Yes it did grenade at 0300 on the Newcastle expressway on my way home from Sydney at 147,000km)
The D4 is not a budget 4x4 but is extremely capable and has almost limousine ride comfort which for me, at least, makes the extra spend worthwhile.
