View Full Version : Rebuilt diff...Front drive shaft rebalance?

I have just had my front diff rebuilt as it was in dire need after quite some time sitting with water in it (I think) by the previous owner. Anyway, question is this...Normally one would mark up the drive (prop) shaft before removing as I have been told that the balancing happened once the shaft was installed and that if you replace it differently, the balance could be out of whack and vibes might occur, but, as the diff is all new (inside) and the mark from shaft to diff flange gone, does this matter? Is there something i need to do or, should i just install, drive and see? Any help here would be really welcomed as there is nothing on the net.
Thanks!

With two CV joints on the shaft you shouldn't have an issue. No mention of it in the workshop manual (extraction attached).

I've never heard that said before... I personally think it'll be fine, especially as it isn't in the workshop manual. But hey, I'm no expert...
Good luck

The shaft gets balanced when manufactured. Can't see a way it could be balanced to the diff. It does make some sense to mark the position when removing a shaft that will be reconnected again, just to make sure it goes back in Its "set"

Yeah as mentioned the shafts are usually balanced individually so technically shouldn't really matter where they bolt up to the flange
