Early 1958 series 2 steering

Hi all, I have an early 1958 series 2 chassis number 143800622. It was driven into a tree a few years back with no bumper on so it bent all the steering components it was bent back in place good enough to get around the farm but now we are rebuilding the driveline on it and I am wanting to buy new parts for it. I have done alot of searching and have read the parts manual but it lists a few different steering configurations. What I am wondering is what I need to order as everywhere online says steering parts for series 2 / 2a. I will have a pretty big list of parts that I will need to buy so I will be asking for more questions again.

As far as I can remember, with the exception of the swivel arrangement including arms, and the damper setup* all the steering components are interchangeable (at least as sets) with later parts. Parts for the earlier (arm on top) swivel arm and bush setup are likely to be hard to find, but converting to the later type is possible, but needs more parts.

One place I would strongly recommend using the later part is the lower arm on the steering relay, having had one break on me.

When fitting tie rod ends and tie rods (including drag links) note that Series 3 changed to TREs with the shank fully threaded so that the clamp to stop movement is clamping on thread, where the earlier type, up to the end of 2a clamps onto an unthreaded section. While the S3 parts can be used, the TREs and tubes must match. Some dealers seem to be unaware of the difference. (differences in the TREs such as the thread for the nut on the conical section in the arm and the use of self locking nuts rather than split pins are immaterial.

*Series Landrovers, at least until Series 3, had a steering damper only as an option, and it is unnecessary if using sensible tyres and keeping steering in good condition, unless driving on very rough road. Damping is provided in the steering relay and to some extent by the swivel preload. Dampers were rarely fitted to early Series 2 in my experience.

Ordering steering parts for an early series 2 can be tricky, as you've found out. Some parts are the same as on late series1s, some the same as on S2a s.
Unless you've already done so, I would start by getting a S1 and early S2 parts manual to compare the part numbers and work out what the differences are, what you've got
and what need. which is easily done if you ask on this forum. Steering arms for example got beefed up over the years and can have 7/16" or 3/8" studs etc. Your car may not
have the original parts fitted. Take your time. You can download parts catalogues for free here

And take particular note of BSF's comment about the fact that it is very likely that by now a Series 2 has parts, perhaps including an entire steering assembly, from a later model.
