Well, getting old and unfit sucks. Had a flat tyre on my OKA today. By the time I got it somewhere safe the tyre had come completely off the rim. Luckily I had bought a new jack for it. Unluckily I hadn’t yet put my 18v 3/4 drive rattler in it. No way I could get the wheel nuts undone so I walked th two ks home to get it. Got them undone. Damn the wheels are heavy. I’ve changed truck wheels before, but not for 6 years or so. I’m knackered.

Well, getting old and unfit sucks.
I've had this discussion with my 100 year old grandfather recently and the general consensus was that it is still better than not getting old.

My mum passed this year at 102. She agreed with you grandfather up to the time when she couldn't get out of bed at all. I had to care for her for nearly five years, with help for the personal stuff.
I'm only 68. Point was I feel like I can do things I no longer can. Just having a whinge really. Yep, I don't want to be dead.

its not too late to help yourself.
advice is free....go into a sporting shop and buy a pair of 2-3kg dumbells.....no heavier
go home and for 5 mins each day do things with them....whatever activity you feel like doing.....youll settle into a routine.
start out with sets of 10 repetitions of whatever movements you have chosen and do those until your 5 mins are up.
do sets of ten until you are comfortable, then increase to 15-20 and work that number until you comfortable, just for 5 mins then rest
you can do your increases by number and or speed , up to your comfort.
the whole of the Royal Australian Navy did a very simple daily 5 minute fitness program, without weights, for many years called the 5BX....til some higher power changed it.
with the dumbells it is so simple to increase your workload , I use 5kg but if you get comfortable you can increase the weight.....one thing.....you WILL see it in the mirror....so will significant others.

Great post, thanks. I was in the Army once. It's just that the last four years have been utter ****. But I need to stop making excuses.
However, sporting shop, in Melbourne, unvaccinated. That ain't going to work. I can't even go to bunnings. But I CAN go to Dan Murphy's. I cannot buy clothes or shoes. Who knew they weren't essential? But booze is. There is a local tool emporium that doesn't ask, but that's about it. Before Jan died I was going to the gym. After, I gave that up. Was going back but then covid happened. No gym for John. Now they are open again, but not for me.
I do have some weights that velcro to my wrists. Not 5k i don't think, but I can wear them while I walk. It's the walking I need to resume.

He suggested using the jack under the socket handle which I'll try on the other wheels, none of which I've needed to remove in the 9 years of ownership.

I’m not old yet - mid 50’s but I keep fit by doing things outside I really enjoy, the main one being rollerskiing.
Buggered if I’m going to lift weights or do one of those crazy boot camp things you see unhappy people being pushed through.
Just find anything at all that gets you moving you like doing 😊.

Just do plenty outdoors, walk and generally just keep active.

Yep, I thought getting out and about was fine too. My cardio rehab physiologist had something to say about that though.
Unless you are moving such that you are breathing hard enough to have difficulty talking or whistling, your heart is not getting the cardio workout required to stay fit and healthy. Just saying... from experience... [bighmmm]

Getting long in the tooth Does "SUCK" But as long as you keep active and pushing your limits it will "SUCK" less [thumbsupbig]
Stay away from the TV and computer and get outside even if it's only a bit of a stroll around the block as long as you don't sit on your bum all day you will feel better for it.
I'm 67 now and I can still go on remote fishing/camping trips solo, I do a lot of gardening and have a large veggie patch to maintain, We have a 100+ year old house that is always in need of some maintainance that also keeps me busy, I help around the farm with stock ( I stay well away from fencing these days), I still kill and butcher my own meat as well.
YES it does take me a LOT longer to do things these days and it knocks me up a bit now BUT I persevere with it because I ENJOY doing stuff [biggrin]
Stay away from the mirror because looking at that old worn and wrinkled up face looking back at you only reminds you just how old you really are[thumbsupbig]
Keep at it Old Mate because we all know that life Begins at 60[bigrolf][bigrolf][bigrolf]

You proved it by walking to get the bits you needed to change the wheel mate- Well done[thumbsupbig] Getting your new truck, planning your trip.. Wouldn't be dead for quids
I got misused by my fav hospital again for refusing to give up, refusing drugs and saying [B]stuff you to pain[biggrin] Oddly looking forward to getting old and grand kids...... A few more runs left in me yet I suspect[bigwhistle]So much was hard when younger. Now its easy I as I generally do not give a stuff what people think of me- that's usually their problem not mine [biggrin]

In the past I have used a long bar that touched the ground on the end and have then driven in the appropriate direction to crack the nuts. Not ideal but needs must. Didn't have that option yesterday. Going to invest in a long breaker bar.

2 things that have started happening of late which I think suck & I find insulting.
Customers have stated saying "Ask the old fella!" when referring to me.
And people, including my Boss, have stated asking "When ae you going to retire?"
Maybe they just want to get id of me.[bigsad]
SWMBO does say my heavy breathing is more intense, doesn't say if it's sexier?

I now find that a 6 rung ladder is equivalent to a 5 metre ladder of yore.
'Climb It' change, perhaps?

Indeed. My first job, post Army, was driving a 57' cherry picker at Australian Iron and Steel at Kembla. No operating it from the ground, either. Had to go up. Now I get a nosebleed standing on a chair.

To me, once you star thinking old, you get old. I made a promise to myself some time ago, I will not live in the past, I will try to live in the moment, and I will try to have have a positive outlook for the future. I suppose two out of three isn't too bad. One thing I've noticed, Grand children are wonderful to have you feel young again, but when you have them for an extended period, you know you are not as young as you once were. The old farts motto? " The older I get, the better I was". boom boom....[biggrin]

Staying active at a level that works for you is important. Sitting all day in front of the TV will kill you. Just find something that you like to do so it becomes part of the routine.
Push the mower yourself not paying the local kid to do it for you. Walking each day somewhere for an hour. Be it around the block or drive somewhere that is scenic for variety.
Parents are in eighties and just completed a 6 week driving lap of Queensland up the coast as far as Port Douglas then turn left and came back inland. Know people who would find that challenging who are 20 years younger. Their thing is dancing ballroom and Scottish country. Both give you a good work out and if you enjoy it is just fun

Nice starter, look up 'Turkish Get - Up' - using a light kettle bell or whatever. A 2 - 3 litre milk container (with water) works fine, as it duplicates the 'instabillity' of a bell - handle far from C of Mass.
Hurts less than a metal lump, when dropped....[bigsad]

Physio told me last Century that ability to get up from a supine position was the most important skill as we age.

Just a heads up for any mature age lady/ gentleman who wishes to have some guidance for suitable exercises to keep flexible. My GP , who is the DVA GP in my local medical centre, downloaded for me a set of exercises designed to be done at home , at your own pace , and intensity. I do a lot of walking, and was having trouble with the left side of my right knee. As she explained, walking will exercise the right side more than the left, so supplementary exercise is needed to balance that out. The handouts are ;
Exercises for your knee
exercises for your lower back
exercises for your shoulder
There are more. Talk to your GP's , if mine can do it, yours can.
Remember, " the older I get, the better I was".[smilebigeye]

Just as in the old, 'Villain' style movies, the one being pursued has been known to trip over nothing in particular!
