Gentlemen,
I purchased a Vinwire Wiring harness for my 1953 Series 1 80", as the original was in very poor condition and had been modified pretty roughly over the years.

Does anyone know where I can get a good colour coded Circuit Diagram? The one in the Workshop Manual for a 1953 vehicle is pretty poor and some of the colour codes are unreadable.

Also, I am using an Alternator and indicators, and have ordered the harness accordingly, so much of my instrument harness will be different from the original diagram, as no voltage regulator is used. I think I have that part worked out, but still need a readable diagram with clear colour codes.

Also, for those who have successfully tackled the new harness job, where is the best place to start. I felt the Junction box looked a good starting place, but can someone tell me where that is located on the chassis of a 53 S1? My vehicle did not have a Junction box, so I really don't know where it should be located and that is important as it sets the correct length of the wires for the head light and horn harness.

Finally, should I run the harness on top of the chassis rails, or on the side? My vehicle ran the rear light hardness though the chassis but there is a Youtube Video showing it on top of the chassis rail, under the tub.

Any pictures, help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

I think it should be through the chassis same as the early 80". You need to pull some tie wire through the chassis when pulling the old one out. If you have already removed it you can get plastic electrical pull that is about 10 -12mm X 1 -2 mm that you can feed through the chassis from an electrical supply shop.175657

Through the chassis.. Early ones had metal hoods, later ones just grommets. Screw holes are a give away.

Hello Jeff,
You don't mention it but because you're now using an alternator instead of a generator, you now have a negative earth system, whereas S1's were built with a positive earth system, like all Lucas designed systems of the era. Changing to negative earth will affect the fuel pump, the ignition coil, the ammeter, turn indicator ("blinker can") circuit, and possibly windscreen wiper circuits. It's more important to understand these implications before you worry about cable colour codes.
The junction box is located on the firewall close to the steering box.
I have a simple and legible colour-coded circuit diagram published in an "Autobooks" workshop manual I could scan and PM to you if you wish.
My own '53 is now a neg earth system but I have retained the generator and installed a new neg earth SU fuel pump and neg earth coil.

Cheers, Rob S
