Series IIA - Tray to tub conversion

Is it very difficult to convert a IIA flat bed tray to a tub conversion? And do you have to use a IIA tub or can you use a SIII tub. I've tried looking all over for this information and had no luck, fingers crossed someone knows.

You could use a SIII tub. The back face of the cab is the front of the tub. SI/II/IIa had a sliding tongue door lock. SIII had an antiburst door lock. You would either have to swap the doors, door lock or door jamb so everything matched.

Quite simple. You can use a 2, 2a, or 3 tub. There are minor differences, but nothing to worry about. Only issues likely are if the chassis has been modified for the tray, perhaps by the fitting of extra brackets or removing some of the ones needed for the tub.

The late S3 tailgate with a galvanised steel liner is an improvement on the earlier ones. Door locks and striker plates are interchangeable between the two types of lock, except for a hole in the door skin of the S3 doors for the key of the antiburst locks fitted to later S3. These locks are, in my view, far superior to the sliding bolt type used earlier.

My 2a has S3 doors with the later locks and the original tub. (Also has the cab and high back seats off the S3, and the steering wheel, which is a better type of plastic but otherwise identical!)

Ok, I'm looking to buy the 2A and I need to know how to identify any chassis modification. Is this do-able without pulling bits of the tray apart and what should I be looking for?

Main thing is to check that the original rear crossmember is still there - see any pictures of Series 2/3. Preferably with the tabs sticking up on it for the tub, but these can easily be replaced. Other than this, any modifications are likely to be extra bit welded on that can be easily cut off.
