Hi all,

I currently own an L322 and looking to replace my other family car with an L405 (also looking at the new Defender), to be primarily driven by SWMBO.

Does anyone know of any good buyers guide resources, or is there a specific model which is preferred out of the lineage (have heard 2016 is the year to get?).

Any feedback/assistance on the search would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks!

Not sure there is a better resource than the Full Fat RR UK forum - well worth a travel through - and ofcourse here !

The 2016 does not have Adblu (assuming you are thinking diesel) and as a result gets the 105l fuel tank (versus 87 I think for a Adblu equipped vehicles); I have a 2017 SDV8 which is a magnificent engine and the car has been extremely reliable and a magnificent long distance tourer.

2013 models are getting on a bit now - almost 10 years old gulp! - so I guess 2016 onwards is probably a good idea.

You can add some subtle mods to make it a very capable off road car if you want - albeit I can count on one hand how many I have seen off road (other than beach and outback touring); mine has dual batteries (cars without rear airconditioning can fit these with ease behind LHS boot panel) with Redarc DCDC, Anderson plugs and Redarc gauge, LLAMS, Rival bash plates, hidden UHF, tow pro etc and I fitted 20’s with 275/5520 Nitto Ridge Grapplers for “off road” (outback trips), albeit I haven’t had much chance to do much of that thanks to Covid etc [emoji35]….,

I use 22’s around town.

The Adblu issue hasn’t bothered me as much as I thought it might TBH so I don’t think I’d let that put you off a post MY16 car - budget permitting - as these cars are holding their values pretty well at the moment given lack of new inventory); will be interesting to see if SDV8’s hold values given they are no longer available.

I’m in Brisbane- so feel free to PM if you want to chat more or look over mine.

Hi irubix..

If you have access to the Vin all Dealer LR servicing is online, You would think a FFRR owner would have to be nuts to NOT do all maintenance required, but I discounted a car from my list cause the dealer couldnt explain the 2 year 40K service gap---,
also dont expect a car yard to know what options are actually in the car, again the vin will tell you.
I am so glad I went with the SDV8... [bigsmile][bigsmile][bigsmile]

Hi , I have a 2016 SDV8 Autobiography which I think is sensational .. it’s just great at everything . Being a 2016 it missed out on Apple car play but there are some after market options available apparently. For me towing a 3.2Ton van I find the extra range provided by the 105ltr tank a real bonus & I have also fitted 20” wheels for towing and dirt trips. Nothing else to report & no issues to date.

IIRC all MY17+ SDV8 are fitted with the e-diff.

I am considering the leap from my 2012 D4 with over 300000 since new to a L405 SDV8, possibly 2019 with low km. Hopefully there will be no gotchas as it will only be used for long distance touring, like my D4.
I have an excellent Indi here in Coffs who will maintain it.
I am also considering a L494 SDV8 as well. I will let higher authority decide when we seriously start looking.

The SDV8's are not exactly thick on the ground.... it took me 7 months to find mine....

Reviving an older thread, I'm considering the jump from my MY12 TDV8 L322 to a MY21.5 D350 L405. Whilst price-wise they're probably ball-park with what I paid for the L322 nearly 10 years ago, it would be a shame to run it in such a dirty farming environment. I think that a Defender would probably be more suitable for me but not for my wife. The D350 seems to always have an e-diff and the engine performance isn't the backward step of a D300, although I'm sure that it would be more than adequate.
