View Full Version : Horn not operating from steering wheel controls

Ok brains trust, just replaced the clock spring on my D4 due to some intermittent audio control and intermittent horn issues.

All seems good and it was an easy job, however the norm will not work at all now when operated from the steering wheel controls.

I’ve confirmed the 15Amp fuse in the engine bay is fine (tested), and the horn definitely still works (tried locking doors with bonnet up).

Only thing I can think is I did notice one of the connectors was a little loose in its socket. Small black connector with one black and one red wire. Possibly this is for the horn?

Don’t mind pulling the wheel off again tomorrow if this is likely the culprit.

I think you've answered your own question...

Ok, dismantled again, cleaned all connectors and squirted with a good amount of contact cleaner.

Checked all electrical connectors for positive fit.

Everything works, bar the horn.

Ideas?

Now you have a new clock spring check for continuity between all the terminals on input and output sides of clock spring.

Check none of the connection wires are bent over.

Had you actually used the horn recently previously to know it still actually works?

Check the connectors at the horns themselves?

Horn works because if you try to lock the disco with bonnet open it still gives the double beep.

Still, I would expect a new clock spring to work, my concern is the horn would not operate from the steering wheel consistently before the change over so it may not be a clock spring issue.

Not sure what else it would be though?

I think the horn that beeps when you try to lock an open car is not the same horn(s) that sound when you press the horn buttons on your steering wheel.

I think? the beep horn is inside the second battery box on the drivers side, I moved mine to fit a battery in there.

The HONK horns are likely to be in front of the radiator but I really have no idea on that one.

They definately sound different.

For what it's worth my horn buttons have stopped working intermitantly too, but I haven't done any work in that department.

I agree with that, there are two horns in front of the intercooler/rad pack, another in the abs box.

Ok, thx again all. Found and fixed the issue, although I suspect it may reappear.

Issue was the horn relay, situated in the fuse panel in the engine bay. Didn’t click when horn pressed but fuse was ok. Swapped with the windscreen washer relay which was same type and bingo, horns work.

Placed the horn relay into the relay socket for the windscreen washer and washer also worked, weird. Suspect I have a failing relay and will source a spare in case.

Reassembled the clock spring and steering wheel (got this down pat now ;) ), and tested everything. Will go for a drive later to confirm everything now works correctly.

That's not a horn in the ABS box, it's a battery backed up sounder for the alarm and sounds nothing like the horns. Trying to lock the car with a door open sounds the horns via a relay in the CJB.

Not on my 2011. Only the one under the ABS module does.

Probably another UK anomaly. They’re a bunch of thieving gits over there [emoji1787]
And they are we’re the convicts! We don’t have our tow bars and spare wheels being stolen!
