View Full Version : Head Unit for Earlier L320 RRS

There are threads about putting in aftermarket head units in D3s etc but I cannot find anything for a RRS (early dash).
My car does not have the nav/command screen so I am looking a a replacement for the standard 6 stacker 6CD-565 head unit. Most of the discussion on D3 units revolve around use of the nav/command screen and most of the radios discussed seem to be cheap chinese units.
What I would like is a reasonable quality unit, with the biggest possible screen that is fully integrated into the dash where the current unit sits. I need rear camera input, bluetooth, modern turn by turn GPS system (I currently use Garmin) ability to use offroad maps like Hemma so I guess to ability to load software like Oziexplorer, decent soundand ideally compatibility with the standard amp under the drivers seat that I currently have (I believe this is optical) - if this is not possible I will rip it out and use an after market amp that is compatible with my HK speakers and sub woofer. The unit needs to be compatible with my current steering wheel controls. - volume, mode selections etc
I am sure I will think of more things but that is all that comes to mind at the moment.
So any suggestions on what to look at?
Thanks
Garry

Does it use a fibre optic system ? Looking at an RRS dash i think you could easily fit a 9-10" screen there without obstructing any other controls , if you want to run apps then an android based system is your best bet, if you just want to run them off our phone then any carplay or android auto compatible stereo will do it.
My so called cheap chinese unit has been going good for over 3 years, i might swap it into my daughters car and get one with a bigger screen.

Yes it does have the fibre-optic link to the amp.
I am not wanting to break new ground in doing this rather see if anyone has done it before - by my calculations a 9"to 10" unit will be too big to fit in the double din slot.

GarryIt doesn't need to fit in the slot, standard double din which the screen sits forward slightly.

Yes thanks - but I need to know what head unit others have fitted before I look at surrounds - looks as if no one on here has replaced the head unit in their early RRS.

I looked into changing the head unit a while ago but didn't get around to going ahead.
When you replace the head unit , the clock on the dash changes to "--:--" because the clock is in the head unit with signal to the dash via canbus.
There are instructions here https://incartec.blob.core.windows.net/instructions/29-712.pdf that show how to dismantle the head unit and just keep the relevant component to keep the dash clock running. The incartec product is specifically for keeping the top navigation screen but even if you don't have the top screen the instructions for keeping the relevant part of the headunit still work. At least according to someones else's post that I can't seem to find now.
I think the first few year models didn't have clock on the dash, so that would mean ignore everything I just said :-)

As mentioned I do not have the screen - looking for a fully integrated system to replace the current system.

I have the dash clock but it is only one of the many options available to select on the dash command centre - so it is never used.

When the L320 was released its trim levels were linked to the engine - no HSE etc. So the basic vehicle was the TDV6 with basic trim and accessories - so things like gps nav were options - if the system was not fitted the spot is a very convenient cubby that is a perfect fit for an aftermarket 6" Garmin GPS which I have in there.

so do you just want to replace the stereo section or the caddy/screen section too, if most are focused on replacing the screen why not just do that ?

As I indicated in the original post - looking for a fully integrated unit that fits into the standard position in the dash - not looking for hang on extra screens.

That is a fitting kit not a head unit which this thread is about. What head unit have others fitted that works in the early L320 and meets the requirements I have outlined.
I am not prepared to reinvent the wheel and get something that may not be suitable - hence asking for advice from people who have done it before but it would seem that no one has done it. Most of the D3 installations discuss using the command screen which I do not have.
Thanks for your input.

Gary, get the fitting kit then decide on a head unit. If you don't want any of the cheap units then any double din will fit.
If you look at the Eonon or Joying websites you'll see what i mean with the 9-10" screens, they protrude about 1cm forward then expand to full width.
Most have a tilting function so you can get a better angle but I think the RRS position is better than in a D3 as it's higher up and angled towards the dash.
FOR EXAMPLE -
Eonon 10.1 Inch Android 10 Universal Double Din Car Stereo (https://www.eonon.com/Android-Car-GPS/2-Din-GPS-Navigation/Eonon-101-Inch-Android-10-Universal-Double-Din-Car-Stereo-with-Bluetooth-50-Car-GPS-Navigation.html)

Thanks for that information - I just had a look at both - your example has the screen sticking out and covers the switches above the radio which I dont want but other Eonon and Joying units may be suitable but I dont know - measuring the space available the max integrated screen size would be about 7".

The aftermarket screens that fit in the factory spot of the D3, fit the RRS as well.

Ok thanks - do you have a recommendation - noting the following:
a reasonable quality unit,
with the biggest possible screen that is fully integrated into the dash where the current unit sits.
I need rear camera input, bluetooth, modern turn by turn GPS system (I currently use Garmin) ability to use offroad maps like Hemma so I guess the ability to load software like Oziexplorer,
decent sound and ideally compatibility with the standard amp under the drivers seat that I currently have (I believe this is optical) - if possible t
he unit needs to be compatible with my current steering wheel controls. - volume, mode selections etc

I've mentioned it before but if you want to run apps independent of your phone you will need an android OS and 7" is the largest flush fitting screen size you can fit. Wheel controls can be used and even extra functions added like a short press for one function and a long press for another.
