For some reason now I've been out twice camping & exploring, etc and been hit by midges where by in the days following I have really bad reactions to the midge bites, so I'm seeking out what is on the market to help protect you against Midges &/or Mozzies and any other annoying bugs?

What do people recommend and have success with?
Are these products pet friendly?
What other methods do people use to ward off the dreaded Midge/mozzie?

thanks in advance....

Eat lots of vegimite, apparently mozzies and midgies don’t like the vitamin B

Worked for me when I lived in Point Sampson a few years ago [emoji1531][emoji1531]

has never worked for me :p

a mix of isopropyl alcohol, a few drops of peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, lavender and rosemary oils worked best for me when i was right into fishing etc

these days i'm lazy and usually use bushmans :p and a coil or two

Still working for me
I bulk up my toast a couple of weeks before going camping, the missus reckons she can smell it coming out in my sweat

Didn’t work at Drakesbrook Weir this year, nothing did
I had to put on the bushmans, and they were still landing and biting where I had applied the bushmans ☹️

Cant help with a repellant - good old Aeroguard works for me - but the red lump/itch as a result of histamines in your body going to the bite area to deal with the bite. If you start taking hay fever tablets (Anti-histamines) before you head out and keep taking them while out, it will not stop the bites but the reaction to them will be minimised.

I find the 24hour versions taken twice daily work wonders.

Try not to camp where the midgies/mosquitos are (mudflats, sandflats, creeks, dams, mangroves or prtetty much any water source) .
Mozzie coils are cheap and effective and lighting up 2 or 3 of them before first light and before last light when they are most active seems to do the trick.
Bushmans works well but dont touch anything plastic or painted if your fingers are covered in the stuff because you will melt it, I have buggered up quite a few hard bodied lures over the years with bushman fingers.

it may sound silly but long sleeved shirts, trakkies and sox are my first line of defence against sandflies when fishing creeks[thumbsupbig]

As Inc said , make your own , I do. You normally have all recommended ingredients home.

I buy ant repellant though.

No idea about all the other little buggers but Mozzies which do give warning of their approach simply need an extremely fast open palm & for that you do need excellent reflexes.
This method does risk the dreaded Cauiliflower Ears from the incessant bashing of same, but hey, you are "enjoying" the great Aussie outdoors so you can't have it both ways. Sleep or Cauliflower Ears?

Your choice.:rocket::Rolling:

I just take my wife along and they leave me alone. She could be 50M away locked in the van and the mozzies would all be over there banging at the wall to get in.

You will be giving Spud bad ideas.[bigrolf]

Though no doubt, he has thought that one through.

Let me know if you try this, Rob. Especially if you have to hold your nose to swallow it![smilebigeye]

I use Bushmans and as Trout pointed out, make sure you clean your hands after application. It slowly decomposed a very good set of fishing sunnies of mine.

Not if you mount it on your head like an Angel Halo & have a sign on your chest denoting you as The New Messiah. Oh, & wear a bed sheet & if you have some crappy old thongs (footwear) wear those as well.

What could possibly go wrong?[bigrolf]

Just cover up as much as is comfortable and use bushmans, Mozzie coils are for around camp and on the boat[thumbsupbig]

Best I've come across is an Australian product called "Nature's Botanical". DEET free, rosemary and cedarwood based. Is available as a cream, a spray, a roll-on. It definitely works - very popular and well known on a number of mine sites I have worked on - Don't get it in your eyes though.

This was the only product that would keep the millions of little flies away from your face when I was working up near Coober Pedy last year - and that area of South Australia is well known for the flies - they drive you bloody crazy.

DEET Free Natural Insect Repellent Australia | Nature's Botanical (https://naturesbotanical.com/)

Another good product that works well in tropical areas where midgies are a problem is another Australian made DEET free product called "Good Riddance".

Natural Mosquito Repellent + Midge Protection | Guaranteed (https://goodriddance.com.au/shop)

Bushmans works well, but I haven't used it since I saw what it did to the top of a plastic esky a while back. If it can do that to hard plastic - I've had enough problems with cancers etc on my face without putting that crap on it.

I did some work at Bushmans recently on their filling machines and looked up DEET.
Interesting read, I'll be looking at the DEET free options in future.

DEET tends to dissolve plastics (acts as a plasticiser) so be careful where you use it. Causing problems on their machines as components fail.

Another good brew is
500ml Metho
125ml Dettol
60ml Baby oil
5ml Citronella oil
Shake her up and put it in a spray bottle
Some say you can replace the citronella with eucalyptus or tea tree oil

Chimps have been seen treating wounds with insects. They're not the only animals to practice 'medicine' - ABC News (https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2022-02-12/chimps-insects-wounds-treatment-medicine-animals/100816186)

From the article "What would you rather — being bitten by mosquitoes or rubbed all over with a millipede? For capuchin monkeys from South America, it seems the latter."
