It's been a long painful journey so far...

2012 D4: 190,000 Km: Often towing heavy 3250Kg caravan.

Started getting Engine System Fault - typically when travelling at highway speed, and often (but not always) when towing. The problem started to occur more frequently and I decided to get local dealer to resolve it thinking they may be better equipped to track it down. Car seemed to go into some form of reduced performance mode (but no reduced perf message) - limited power (say 90km/hr on the flat), but not really slow/suspension down sort of limp mode. Fault message disappeared after restarting car.

Dealer is in Regional Victoria

Dealer visit 1: Inconclusive. No fault found. Couldn't find any fault - but gave car a wash!
Dealer visit 2: I took car to Dealer with active fault showing. They booked in for Dealer Visit 3.
Dealer visit 3: Fault diagnosed: Advised that Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 needed replacing
Dealer visit 4: Arrived at date/time on appointment card, but advised booking wasn't in 'the system' so told to come back another day
Dealer visit 5: Fuel pressure regulator replaced - advised P0089-22 fault fixed
Started logging with IID tool - P0089-22 fault recurred
Occasionally Orange Engine Warning light comes on - stays on overnight - but clear next day??
Dealer visit 6: Dropped in to show service dept that top intercooler hose had dropped off and coolant overflow cap had come off after last service
Gap IId logs P0087 fault: Fuel Rail Pressure too low
Dealer visit 7: Diagnosed that LPFP and Fuel filter should be changed
Dealer visit 8: LPFP and Fuel Filter replaced
Engine System Fault recurs
Dealer visit 9: All injectors replaced
Engine Systems Fault again : P0087-00(28)

Logging with Gap IId - Engine System Fault doesn't always seem to get logged - not even under pending??

So far, $7k donated to local dealer - and not really any closer to solving problem - and really pretty unsafe when losing power with Heavy Vehicles right up behind me.

Scanning around various posts, I see all sorts of potential causes - alternator problems, earth straps, intercooler hoses - and of course HPFP issues

Booked in again with same Dealer for visits 10 (diagnosis) and presumably 11 (HPFP replacement??). Am I nuts to go back to same dealer or are these issues devilishly hard to diagnose?

Has anyone got any advice on what to do now? (I'm guessing that Dealer will now advise HPFP - taking me up to $20k

A good Indie is the way to go.
Dealers don’t have the best reputation,as per numerous other posts on here over the years.

Hopefully someone will chime in with one in your area.

Sorry I can’t help with the faults.

Good luck with it all.

Edit, looks like you are close to Melbourne?
This info may be helpfull for others that know a good indie in the area.

Time to find an indie from what you have posted, seems like they are just doing process of elimination at your expense.

I'm expecting from what you have posted you have a HPFP issue and it will be alot cheaper getting it done at a good indie.

I'd keep well away from that stealer but then again the only item left to replace is the HPFP which is probably where they should have started their diagnosis with, your just up the rd from me so if you want to save same cash and DIY the replacement i'm able to assist.

V generous offer, but I'm no longer down your way - shifted up to Goulburn Valley.

Have it booked in with same dealer to replace HPFP - concluded that I'd prefer to have just single point accountability.
