I'm expecting problems tomorrow and it won't be the weather.
The good woman just phoned to say that she can't get home this arvo and that she will be staying at her niece's place.
I suggested that she stay at work and do a double shift. You know. Think of the money!
In hindsight, probably not a wise choice of words.[bigwhistle]

That is a bit wild.

We are the same as Ian,on top of a hill, good place to be in this weather.

One of the DIL,parents, live in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The fences were washed away a couple of days ago,350mm in the rain guage overnight,as were the sheep.[bigsad]Cattle are fine, they didnt realise half the fences were gone, just stayed in the paddocks.[biggrin]

They found 6 sheep early the next day, went back to get the ute and trailer, came back and wild dogs had got to them, one survived.[bigsad]
They havent had much luck lately, two months ago, their Kelpie, which was 13 yrs old,but still good on the farm, got hold a bait,so that was the end of her.[bigsad]
They dont bait but many others in the area do,the crows are generally the culprits, moving the baits around.

on the way home on that night in Jan 74 :p

We were on Fraser island, our parents had to get us back home to school,i remember them saying[bighmmm]

From the Forestry camp at Coomboo lake,Series one with wooden trailer in tow, dodging the dead trees and the sea, at the south end of the island, washed up.King tide rising, luckily Gorden Elmer saw the flashing headlights of the vehicle as he was going to head off.He had been radioed the day before, but we were running late, and with the tide,he didnt think we would get there..

Couldnt get the barge in,it was very rough and blowing a gale.Eventually, with hand signal communication, through around 1M of sea water,we eventually were on the barge and tied down.Over on the other side,it wouldnt start, battery flat as a tack, the generator light had been on for most of the trip.Jump started it into life, off the barge, and home around 5 hours later, all soaked through like drowned rats[biggrin]

i think it was wetter inside the vehicle than outside.[bigsad][biggrin]

i remember also, whenever the speed into the water was enough for the water to hit the windscreen,it used to splutter and usually die,out with the can of RP7,i think it was called in those days, give the engine a good spray, then off again until the next time it happened. And on that trip it happened with regularlity.A bit hairy when it happened on the beach dodging the waves.

EDIT,we also had the school holidays extended for a week, same as this year because of Covid.

Here in Westlake , my small rain gauge started over flowing on Wednesday but was raining too heavy to empty it , we have had a lot more rain on Thursday & Friday . I emptied it this morning but it has been raining stead all night. The gauge holds 150mm , my guess is we have had at least 400mm this week so far because the pool had come up around 350mm & started overflowing around 4pm yesterday , but we had lost power 10pm the night before so could not use the pump.

Yep. Both the creeks' water levels have been up and down, like a whore's drawers. My wife had a bit of a fright, on her way home this a.m, when she was waved through about 3" of water by the firies and halfway across, a 2' wall of water came down and hit her Kia Cerato. A quick uee and thankfully, no harm down. She eventually found another route home, which has since closed.

Gave her a bit of a fright, I can tell!

Beerburrum weather station, about 12-14km northish from me, recorded 293mm in 24hrs to 9am this morning (26/2) and as at 2130 (qld time) has recorded another 234mm since 9am, in just 12hrs.

There is A LOT of water around this area as shown by Saitch's concern for the cake shop. Currently there are 216 road closures in the Moreton Bay Regional Council area. It is not a time to be on the road unless it is absolutely necessary and even then a great deal of care must be taken.

Unfortunately forecast is for more of the same tomorrow, with the system moving slowly south(ish). We've smashed the record for the wettest February here.

Here in Westlake my 150 mm rain gauge overflowed during the night & the pool which I emptied down to the bottom of the skimmer box has come up to just under the coping over night which would be around 250mm. We are having steady rain at the moment but it has just started to thunder. We live on the side of a hill with the river on one side & the lake on the other, we will be OK but the

Centenary suburb's started flooding yesterday morning & Wivenhoe again has opened the flood gates & the water is due to reach Brisbane at the high tide yet again but that's OK peoples insurance will foot the bill. Surely by now they can calculate a time frame where the water reaches Brisbane at low tide & the BOM can give the Dams more accurate information about how much the weather is going to impact the dam so they can start releasing some water earlier so it dose not impact those living below the dam. Wivenhoe was built to stop flooding but it has become a sauce of revenue & they hold the water until it is too late which causes a lot more flooding .
One of the problems with the Brisbane River is that the Bremmer River & most of the creeks enter the River heading up stream instead of down stream so when there is when the river floods the water flows into the Bremmer & the creeks causing them to back up .
Well that is my rant for today , every one take care & don't drive through flood water & stay safe.

I can sympathise with that. I seem to recall a hell of a lot of indecision being made by folk who should have known better. Seemed to be a lot of he said, They said, I said **** going on.

Meanwhile residents were the losers.

Insurance may cover a lot of it but they will always up next year's Premiums so really residents can't win eventually..

Ipswich has one of the most complex flood systems in Australia, definitely the most complex system in a populated area. Many of the creeks can flow in either direction, depending on where the rain falls. Bundamba Creek can flow in either direction, faster than an SES floodboat can travel in still water.
As your suburb is a short distance downstream from the confluence of the the Brisbane and Bremer Rivers, your area would be impacted by any flooding in Ipswich.
Stay safe, mate.

We are OK up on the hill here , In 74 the water didn't get anywhere near our place , Bit concerned about daughter at Riverhills though. If it is no worst than 74 she will be OK don't think it impacted there property in 74 but was at the the other end of there street in 2011. Other daughter in Camira lost power this morning but is back on now, They are high & water will never impact them except they may have to find other ways to get out of where they live.

We've managed to clear the bridge of rather large driftwood, although the water rose 2 feet while we were paddling in it with a chainsaw. So we are still stranded

We have been cooking on a portable single butane gas burner for last 6 weeks , Our induction cook top carked it & is dearer to repair than for a new one . Because we have stone bench tops we had to buy the same brand again , there web site showed in stock two 1week delivery , 3 days later they sent new D/D of 4 weeks then the day before delivery rang to say another two weeks , STD reason on transport due to Covid . New D/D is tomorrow , won't hold my breath , new excuse will be due to floods i guess.

Jeezuz! You poor buggers are really copping it. I've never seen water flow along a Public road & into properties like some of those images. Being swept away would be your biggest concern I would think. The worst is yet to come I imagine, with repairs & cleaning up the Manor.

We'd just like a bit of that but it always goes North & South of Adelaide for some reason until later in the season.
I reckon it is probably the hot air rising from Parliament House that cause the wet stuff to divert, a bit like a Freeway.
Oh well keep dry & keep safe if you can. If you can't be careful.

Problem is here in Qld it is almost impossible to find any trades people to do the work , I have been trying to get a Brick Layer for over 2 years all say there too busy & if you use the people your insurance send out it takes for ever to get the job completed. We used our insurances recommended repairer about a year & half ago , they quoted $12,000 to replace two whirlybirds , three roof tiles , three colour bond sheets on our pergola & the pool heater solar panels , took then a year to complete the work . The pool heater panels installed was around $3,000 so they pocketed $9,000 for less than a days work & less than $500 in materials. No wonder our insurance is so expensive . I should have taken the Insurance Co's offer to pay me out , could have done it all in less than a week & for less than $6,000. This is going to make it even worst.

Word of advice which you probably realise by now. Apologies 1950.
Never ever (I know that is bad grammar according to my primary school teacher of yore but she probably won't read this. [bighmmm])

never pay anyone all the money up front. Pay only for the work done by Progress Claims on presentation of their invoice. Usually that sorts out the Bushrangers from the Bank Managers, not always, but it lets them know you are keeping them honest.

I feel your pain! Having previously learned the hard way also, I obtained several quotes for a re-roofing job after the widespread 2015 Bris. hailstorm. I negotiated with RACQ for a payout to manage the job personally: they said OK, just tell us when it's completed to your satisfaction...and sent the $$$ upfront to my account. Couldn't fault them.

Same with the smaller work,i have leaks and maintenance work needed on our sheds, bloody hard to find a good roofer.

About 5yrs ago,i found one,a guy who works for himself, but he is bloody busy,so hard to nail down.

As i say to him,i pay same day,which i do,they look after me,i look after them.I trust him,just DD the money over,done.

He fixes things once, properly,no rubbish left around,to cause more rust, and is proactive about what is going to need doing in the future,i often meet him there to look at it all,or he sends pics.

Good Tradies are tough to find any where[bigwhistle] Insurance issues are a bit overwhelmed as well. A tap flooded a relatives house last week. Apparently 70K damage[bighmmm][bighmmm] They were told it had to be done quickly before mold made the house uninhabitable. They cannot get onto the insurance company now due to NSW and QLD floods apparently.

Wet even were its not raining is very common apparently.

Getting a tad hungry as have been trying to locate the owner of a dog that wandered in here this am. Bugger likes ALDI Cheese though. Owner just called & taken him off. Nice dog, I miss him already.[happycry]

How to catch a stray dog Lesson 1 by Mr bee.

Method.

He was quite a timid dog so I used small bits of Aldi's Speshul Fromage to draw him in closer then he got some larger bits until I could grab his collar & read the Council details, so phoned them. It really was the strangest thing though. The name on the Dog Tag it seems was the same name as a company I worked for once who gave me the irrits. but the guy had abbreviated the real name to that. I couldn't believe it, it was fate that had brought us together.

Anyway, finished up with ***** laying at my feet trying to have a zzzzzzzz & it felt like we'd been mates for a long time. The only thing I could grab as a "lead" in case he wanted to bugger off again was a bent wire coat hanger. No kid. [bigsad]

Anyway, once he heard tyres on gravel he knew the jig was up. We bid each other a fond farewell & off he went.

The bloke had built a new fence but ***** had easily got out. Now he has got the taste of Ye olde aged 50 years Aldi Speshul Fromage I just know he'll be back one day.

Maybe it wasn't the cheese that attracted him after all, but the classy Dog Lead.

We were to have a new induction cook top delivered Tuesday , driver rang in the morning asking about access into our house & flooding in our local area , I told him the Centenary Hwy was closed at the bridge & he would need to come via Gateway & Logan Motorway , with that he cancelled saying it was too expensive , didn't want to pay the tolls. I would not have minded only that we purchased the cook top 7 weeks & I received a receipt stating in stock Brisbane & delivery 2 days , the day after D/D they contacted me to say C/T was not in stock & gave me a new D/D in 4 weeks , the day before that date was contacted again stating due to Covid & lack of transport from Melbourne the new date would be Tuesday. Now they are saying Friday so we now have to cancel my doctors appointments hoping they will turn up Friday. I spent half of Wednesday on the phone yesterday trying to get through to the supplier listing to how my call was important to them to be told it had been delivered & I informed them it hadn't because the driver wouldn't use toll roads . The centenary Hwy reopened yesterday , we have just had another 60mm over night & there is a lot more to come today so if this keeps up it may close again . To make things worst we lost power 10pm last Friday & power came back on just before lunch yesterday & the guy we who is going to enlarge the hole in our granite bench top business went under water in Sumner Park so we may have to find someone else. Suppose we can.t complain there are lots who have lost everything , just getting sick of cooking on one of those single burner stoves that take the small butane pressure cans.

Yes they were before they closed down every branch they could think of. Stirling does not even have a cash machine anymore & that was the last remaining vestige that there had even been Banks here. That machine was installed in the front of the Pharmacy of all places.
Fortunately AP can do a Balance print out for the Finance guy coming today but cash? Oh no. That **** is olde fashioned don't you know. No idea why it was removed, maybe the rental charges were too great.

CBA, gone ANZ gone Westpac went a couple of years ago Who else is there these days? No body.
If we need Bank services we have to go down to the smoke to Burnside or East to Mount Barker neither are convenient & Stirling is now quite a large, growing town. Or try & do it online.

yeah 4bee , I understand your feelings about cash , but to be honest , I have had about $150 cash in my wallet that I have not touched for about 18mths......I have no need to....eftpos /cashless trade has caught up to me , as the mobile phone usage is as well , mostly because I have a very patient tolerant wife who lives this life as I get dragged along behind , not kicking and struggling as much as I used to.

I have just inherited her "old" smart phone as her employer just issued new ones to their management team.

I am slowly understanding how the smartphone can take control of everything in our dailly lives.....actually quite painlessly

So yeah, once you get used to using these things you don't need to visit the at machines( my computer wont let me write the abbreviated form)

so, the smart phone, as long as it is charged is making life so much easier for the thousands of flood affected people without power, access to their banks , or other services they need.

and just to add to everything , we are experiencing thunderstorms and more heavy rain this morning....better charge my phone up hahaha.

yeah 4bee , I understand your feelings about cash , but to be honest , I have had about $150 cash in my wallet that I have not touched for about 18mths......I have no need to....eftpos /cashless trade has caught up to me , as the mobile phone usage is as well , mostly because I have a very patient tolerant wife who lives this life as I get dragged along behind , not kicking and struggling as much as I used to.

I dont know where the truck was coming from, but going from somewhere like Brookfield to Ipswich was a nightmare with Centenary HWY shut.Milton road and Coronation drives were also closed.
One of the boys had to go from Brookfield to Borallon, gave up,went the next day when the Centenary HWY was open.

But not going somewhere because of Tolls is a real **** poor excuse.

I love cooking on the single butane burner stove.....it means I'm out bush away from all this......

If I was out bush I wouldn't mind but not at home , It wasn't so bad until we lost power , we still had an oven , kettle , toaster & oven , to cook with but wears a bit thin for any length of time.

Was coming from Export Industrial Park some where near Brisbane Airport .I would thought Gateway , Logan Motor Way then Centenary Hwy & turn off at Darra exit to go to Westlake . would have been quickest even if roads were not flooded . Just didn't want to pay tolls.

Centenary was shut at Jindalee,so i presume to get to your place would have been easy.

Tolls,what a load of crap

4BEE,they have different amounts,cars,commercial vehicles,private vehicles,company vehicles,trucks,etc.
Different prices at different tolls.Same as tunnels.
Some are $3.00,some $6.00,at a guess.

Transponder on windscreen activates when travelling through,we have an account, paid monthly.
It certainly adds up,one job for us can cost over $25.00 in tolls.[bigsad]

Not sure for a body truck if that is what they were using or a courier would be different charges , they charge by no of axels , You have a transponder mounted on inside if windscreen that registers as you drive under the gantry , I usually have $50 on mine which automatically gets toped up from my bank account when it is getting low . & they send you notification when they have done a bank withal. If you don't have a transponder the camera will take a photo of your No Plate & they will send you an account with an administration fee.

I just received a message saying they are coming between 8.30 & 11.30 tomorrow morning.

Ok,Google is your friend.[thumbsupbig]

I have noticed our transponder works in the Sydney area so maybe they are all hooked up together, ripping us off.

I remember when we bought the D4 from a Melbourne dealer we drove it back with no plates on it,which is within the rules.Through the tolls around Sydney and here for a few days,no worries [biggrin]

But yes the bill we get for our work vehicles is pretty high, just imagine what it would be like for some of these large trucking firms.

Don’t know what tourists do about tolls, maybe it goes on the car hire bill when they get it.

From what I read the tolls have only been dropped on the tunnels , I believe the gateway & Logan Motorway are still active . With the Centenary Hwy now reopened he can come through the Airport & Legacy Tunnels onto Centenary Hwy, which would be quicker than Gateway ,Logan Motorway & Centenary Hwy.

back to the butane stove.

after we lost power from the storm prior to the floods, I offered to cook breakfast for the SSWMBO and looked at me and said "yeah, what"

I went into the shed and bought out the stove and within about 15mins had hot coffee , fried eggs on hot buttered toast ready to go.

She looked at me and said "do you always do this when you go bush" I said "yeah sometimes I do it for 7 or 8 guys if theyre awake"

she ate up and said yum. big compliment from her to Den.

btw , I do run a b'fast service for the boys .....and have to change the butane cylinder several times.

I have a saucepan that fills my coffee plunger perfectly and some mornings that gets filled a lot of times.

No a sadder note for me & my family, our Grand Parents house on the banks of the Bremer River Ipswich just below the new bridge has gone under again 177387 The house was built on the sand stone foundation ( carved by convicts ) of the first beer brewery in Queensland by my grand mother's father after the brewery after it burned down. Her father also built two other houses on the site for the family & on his death my grand parents inherited it , one next door on same sand stone foundations & a high set behind them , these were built for the other two sisters. The house next door was demolished after the 74 floods & the high set is still standing . Up until 74 the water had only come up to just under the floor boards of this house , in 74 the water i believe was 1.8m's over the roof . The house was then rented as two flats until sold some time between 74 & 2011 . At this time my wife & I thought about buying the house after the Qld Gov said that Wivenhoe was built to prevent the flooding , we had just built a new house at the time so decided not to buy it (thank God) In 2011 the house was flooded again . This flood I am told the was fully under yet again.177386 This next photo is taken from a different position on the bridge & you can just see the top of the green roof , the guy who took the photo said the water was up to the gutters & was a couple of days before the river peaked 177393 So sad to see this , so many child hood memories in this house , sleep overs with my cousin , playing in the dark cellar ( no lights ) making up ghost stories to scare our younger cousins when they came to visit us . During the depression years my Grand Parents allowed homeless men looking for work to sleep in the cellar . This house has a lot of history , the cast railings , windows , doors & other fittings of the house came from the Castle on Blackstone Hill. :BigCry: The Castle 177400 I do hope my Grand Parents house can be saved again for out & Ipswich's history.

Is it a fair system? Seems to me that when the Bridge, Motorway etc etc is paid for will they still be ripping money off drivers at a reduced rate for routine Maintenance etc or will it still go into General Govt. coffers?

Is it the hole diam that needs enlarging or deepening, if so, can you not do it yourself with a Hammer & sharp chisel (s) bit by bit?

Just a thought as you haven't exactly described your problem.

Our Induction stove didn't need any faffing around as it was the full Induction stove, ie. Standard ovens but Induction top. It just required a heavier cable back to the board to be on the safe side.

She loves it more than me I fear, but she can't take it to bed with her.

BTW, if you can beg borrow or steal the gear, drilling a series of say 1/2" holes close together would allow you to chisel out the remaining stuff & join up the holes rather than doing it as one large exercise.

Wish it was that easy , the bench top is made of Granite , Need proper PPE & cutting blade . Only one side needs to be cut , the length is correct thank goodness other wise we would have had to get a new cabinet made but the width is 15 mm too short . The stove top is same brand but they don't make the same model any more & I looked at other brands & I would have had to cut the length as well as the width. We had the same problem when we had to replace our cloths dryer , Laundry had been built around the washing machine & dryer & second fridge / freezer , I only found one brand that would fit onto the space . I don't want to do it my self encase I brake it.

Ah ok, I hear the granite tops can be a bit tricky so can understand your reluctance A new top could cost more than the induction stuff

As a very last resort you can buy 100mm Diamond blades at Bunnings etc, it just needs a small amount of water dribbling over the cut while you are cutting. Saves the dust, ergo PPE & cools the blade. Needs steady hands though.

Blades normally fit an angle Grinder. Sorry I can't help further but would if I could but can't.

I guess if you can afford to wait that is the better option rather than the brown stuff hitting the spinny thing. She would not be happy & remind visitors of your gallant attempt until your dying day.

I can't overstate it, it's still a bloody war zone here [emoji20]

The devastation is more vast than anything I've been in/seen in my plus 50 years.

People from Brisbane and other parts of NSW who have been involved in flood recovery are gobsmacked by the scale and totality of it in Lismore.
In site meetings for most of the morning, was told that 2000 homes are to be demolished. I'm still lairy of those numbers, but it's huge.

I've resisted taking photos, if anyone is interested there are plenty on Insta and FB
#revivethenorthernrivers on Insta is a good one.
