View Full Version : Both indicators coming on spontaneously.

Vehicle concerned is a 1996 model year d1.
This is a bit weird. I'll be driving along and both indicators will come on as if I'd pressed the hazard switch but without the hazard indicator light on the dash. The only way I can get them off is to pull over and switch off the engine then turn the key back to the last position before start.
Vibration seems to set it off. It started not long after I changed to fairly aggressive MT style tyres. It would happen reliably at the same spot on a heavily corrugated forestry road. Now it's worse and will happen just about any old time.
The haynes wiring diagrams show the existence of a "direction indicator flasher unit" and a "direction indicator switch" although it's not immediately obvious to me where these are located.
Be great to hear fro anyone who has had this issue and resolved it:-)

not had the issue, but the indicator switch is the stalk .. the flasher relay is under the drivers cubby hatch, fuse box, IIRC somewhere near the top RH corner. It plugs INTO the fuse box, so it pokes downwards a bit out of the fuse box.
It should be marked as such on the access panel inside ... there's a diagram of the fuse box layout.
If still confusing to locate, have the access panel open, ignition on, and turn on an indicator or hazards and you will hear and feel it click on and off in sync with the lights .. that'll be it! [biggrin]

Found the relay. It just looks like a plug to me. Looks to me like a PO has messed around with the yellow wire. Two extra wires soldered on then cut off. Can't see in the photos but an earth point has been cut too just down from those extra wires.
When you say that'll be it do you mean to replace the relay/looks-like-a-plug-thing with a new one?

Does someone please have a photo of what this stuff is supposed to look like originally?

I can't show you a photo of mine.. it's been modded, so won't make sense.
It's not the plug .. I think that's a main feed plug .. yellow wire may be batt voltage constant.
Relay is to the right of the plug with yellow wire(with the orientation of the photo as is .. higher up) .. I think I can see it. Little black box.
So in your car, just to the right of the plug(towards the door), look carefully you should see a small box, just proud of the plug. It'll have some markings on the face if it .. use a torch if you need.
Just pull it out(I think).
I can't recall exactly, but I don't remember any clips to secure it. The relay itself will have male spade connectors, once pulled out.
On my D1, I replaced my relay with an LED version for a Defender. I wouldn't have thought they'd be different, and electrically they're the same .. phyiscally different shape. So in my D1 now, I have small extension wires from the(female) plug at the fuse box to the 'remote' indicator relay .. so if I take a pic, looks totally different to yours.
If you do 'find it' .. don't heave it hard to remove if it's not easy .. wiggle it a bit first .. there may be a small catch to undo before it comes out.
And remember: if you have the indicator/hazards on whilst your down in there... it will make an audible click sounds and you will feel the vibration of the click on the relay body just to be 100% sure it's it.

the inertia button behind the washer bottle can with a bump used to set off my D1s hazards, but it didn't cut the fuel off and l had to pull over on the side of road and press the button to reset. not saying this is you problem. It is a safety device that should cut fuel pump, unlock doors and put on hazards. . But yours might be a bad earth as others have suggested.
Re the cut wires my D1 l found few that came from factory with a neat cut on the original loom. I presume for different spec levels, and the factory skimping finishing with a terminating plug or similar.

Got it now. AMR4873. Hard to see black things and the clicking is strong enough to feel when you grab the plug - that's my excuse anyway:-)
They are 40 pounds or so so I might try some from wrecks first even def one as you say.
Mine did have clips top and bottom of the housing and was very fiddly - unclip one the other reclips etc. Happily I was able to show some patience. Not always the case I'm afraid - check the 1st photo: I can verify the plug is a main feed - a loose main feed in my case lol

Washer bottle can is the plastic reservoir back right of the engine bay right?
I had a look behind - what does the inertia button look like please? Do all d1's have them?

It happens whether or not the relay is plugged in. Is this consistent with the relay being the problem?

Weird.
I'd have thought that flasher unit removed, you cut power to the globes completely.
But if you have an alarm .. maybe this could be feeding back in some way. Dunno anything alarm system to help tho .. sorry.

I'd have thought the same. Certainly nothing happens if you try to indicate as usual.
This truck may well have had an alarm actually. It originates from a very posh showroom in London and was chock full of yuppie rubbish before I got hold of it.

Did this get resolved?
Mine has done the same in the past, it is related to the alarm system , mine would occasionally be set off when doing very rough tracks, we had an ongoing joke that if Matts hazard lights were going the track was getting worse or better depending on how you look at life.
Mine sometimes fixed itself by cycling the ignition, if that did not work there is a green module under the L/H kick panel , tucked right up behind the glove box, unplug that and cycle the ignition a couple of times.
This will also fix the issue of the alarm locking out the ignition if activated by electronic interference, another occasional oddity which has happened to mine

I had the same problem on the 2012 puma, it set the hazards off when you went over rough roads and I would turn it off (lights still flashing) and when I restarted they stopped. I could never find the problem and maybe it could have resolved itself as it has not happened since. Some said it was the security alarm but not sure.
If it happened out in the bush I would pull the fuse and then replace it on the blacktop where it would not happen again.

Thanks guys. I haven't resolved this. Lately it's only been doing it out in the bush where it doesn't matter so it's on the back burner again while I sort an oil leak and abs. At one stage it was doing it on the motorway which was a pain.
