Probably something to do with inhaling freon over the years?[wink11]

More likely the Anesthetic effect of Methyl Chloride, certainly not Sulphur Dioxide.
Just had my annual Eye test which passed with Flying colours, but really I suspect it was the fact that "Flight" is out there on a limb to the right & I was concentrating on the LH column.
Methyl Chloride is a colorless, flammable, toxic gas that was used widely as a refrigerant and has many current industrial applications, including use as a local anesthetic, a chemical intermediate in silicone polymer production and drug manufacturing, an extractant for oils and resins, a solvent in butyl rubber and .
Funny place to have it in the "Parking Lot" though.:bat:

Thats such a massive shame. It'll be interesting to hear if they do rebuild it or if it is unrepairable.

On the (very) rare occasion it graced the UAE it used to sit right outside my office window. I could stand on the balcony and hit it with a stone and I've got a pretty lame throw.
It was a magnificent beast, and it's smaller brothers (AN-124) were almost as formidable. I used to see them weekly.
Very sad to see its demise, but I believe they have enough spares to practically build another one. Here's hoping.

Hopefully all is not lost. The partially completed second airframe might not be in the same hangar that was destroyed...

Yeah, they may have a Pressurisation problem for a start if some inconsiderate bastard Ivan used her for target practice with an AK.
I read that the crowd who operate them has another dozen of the smaller models. [biggrin]
Blimey, I hope they got those away.

A lot has happened since then.
EDIT.
Has the AN-225 been destroyed?
The world's largest aircraft, the Antonov AN-225, has been destroyed during Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian authorities said on Sunday (Feb. 27).9 hours ago
So who can say? I hope it isn't the case.

Yeah bugger awesome plane for sure.
I've seen the 124's in real life but never the 225.

To paraphrase Douglas Adams : "The 225 is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to the wingspan of the Antonov 225".
I was talking to my 7 year old about it last night, and to try and give it some perspective we measured it in "front yards". As in if one wing started here, at the end of our front yard. The end of the other wing would be at the end of Daves yard, 4 houses down. So it spans 5 yards. We then calculated if we sliced our house across the laundry, both bits would slide into the fuselage cleanly end to end with enough room for 4 of our swimming pools sideways, stacked (2x2) and full of water. At that point there'd still be cargo weight capacity left over.

Even the remaining parts have so much damage and I'm sure the entire thing has been heat affected.
I would love to see the Antonov rebuilt and fly again, but I suspect there will be very little that they can reuse.

Maybe the " pre-flying one" (?) ,but isn't there a 1/2 built one in a hangar there that was photographed & discussed? Let's hope they never touched that one & regardless of who made it, it was still a wonderfully engineered piece of kit.
Maybe when this "invasion" is all done with one day soon [bighmmm], there may be a ground swell to finish it one day for commercial reasons, but personally I wouldn't like to travel in it if there are softened ally bits of the wrecked one in it's rebuild.

Rather than build a "vaccine" factory in Victoria... spend the money AND give refuge to some Ukranians... like the entire Antonov Company...and what's left of the factory and parts... and Plans.
Would give us both expertise, Goodwill and maybe a viable AUSTRALIAN Industry. If we subsidised it the way we shovelled dollars to Ford & GM, we'd have enough to ...... How much did we GIVE them with armaments and Fighting Vehicles and costs of transport and training and and and..? For Zero return ?
Bonus would be.... when we next have our 'once in a thousand years central Australian Floods' in the next few years...and East-West links are cut, we'd have a viable replacement !
Disclaimer:- I just want to see the 225 et all back in the air. And more of them. In Oz. [biggrin]

The vaccine factory we are building in Victoria is pretty important.
It will manufacture all of our snake, spider & other anti venins as fell as the quad flu vaccine which is not only used in Australia but around the world.

Yeah I thought that too as most of the common photos only show it from the port side so the starboard engines aren't visible. I'm pretty sure the chief pilot mentioned that the last engine was fitted a couple of days before and it had enough fuel to get to the company offices in Germany. It's beginning to sound like a complete balls up, followed by an ass covering exercise! But we may never know. A couple of pics.

Someone reported that an existing semi built hull with photos could be saved not long after this one was wrecked but like you I can't find any reference again.[bigsad]
Damn! I requested they didn't release my anonymous donation of squillions but seems they did after all.

Correct - there is a second unfinished AN225 located at a different location to where the AN225 was destroyed.

The location hasn't been revealed with Antonov saying that it is due to defence industrial programs and is therefore of the interests of national security. I can only assume that hanger is owned by the Ukranian Defence or their contractors.

I do too.
It'll be interesting to see what they do, if they've scrapped it, use it to rebuild the spare, or use the spare to rebuild the original. Hopefully which ever way they go, they manage to see an AN225 flying again.
