View Full Version : ARB Compressor install D4 engine bay

I wish to install a newly acquired ARB Air compressor in the right hand/drivers side compartment.

There appears to be plenty of room for it there.

I don't want to move my existing 2nd battery that is in front of the primary battery on the left hand side.

Is there any down side to placing that 12v motor adjacent to the various ECUs in that compartment?

Any comments from others that have done this install would be appreciated.

Thanks

There are no ECU's on the drivers side so go ahead.

ABS ecu is in there no?
not that there's any issue. loads of people have put a compressor in the LHS aux battery compartment.

The pump is, not noticed any ECU associated with it - either way no issue putting a compressor there, i have an 85AH AGM there.

You own a D3 not a D4 yeah?

You can move things around and get a compressor in their I believe, but it’s not as straightforward as a 3

Maybe that's what was done as i have seen an ARB twin fitted there more than once. On a D3 the tray is empty already so a battery or compressor will drop straight in.

In later D4’s that module isn’t there. I have mine installed in that position. Have a look at this thread: installing compressor in D4 engine bay (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-and-4-a/241750-installing-compressor-d4-engine-bay-post2606790.html#post2606790)

The main gotcha is that in some D4’s the nutserts under the ABS pump (which are excellent to mount the compressor to) can be slightly obstructed. Covered in the linked thread.

Edit: this is more of an issue for putting a battery in there rather than a compressor

ah that explains it. Mine (2016 TDV6) looks like this. the only thing I'd need to move is the two plugs but there's enough slack to relocated them to the side.

Grrr. Damn 2010 model I have with all that crap there. I’d love to know where it all went to on the later models? Moved or changed architecture to not need it? [emoji2369]

The tcs module is just moved to the other side of the battery box I think ?

Thanks for all the comments and descriptions of individual installations.

Seems as though there are many variations between vehicle models and build year as to what is contained in the drivers side battery box.

Mine is similar to 100kin4 below but with a ECU black box attached to the engine side of the battery box.

I am able to fit the compressor with out moving anything but will need to make up a base plate to secure the compressor as others have done.

My only concern was that the black box covering the ECU may be affected by heat generated during compressor operation.

I may have to relocate the black ECU as indicated by 100kin4 and his yellow highlight.

Thanks again for all the comments

Hi,

This is what needs to happen for me. I guess there must be a link to the original post detailing this move and install.

Is there enough wiring loom length or is this a difficult process?

I looked at this but there is no room to fit that in that position in mine from what I can determine. There was a horn in there - I think that’s the alarm horn? Seems a pain in the backside.

As most have noted already:
*The TCCM (transfer case control module) has been in 3 different spots between D3 - last D4
*D3 the TCCM is behind the main battery, so the box on the drivers side is basically empty.
*D4 (lets call them early models) the TCCM and the glowplug module is in the drivers side box (just where you would fit a compressor).
*D4 (last models MY15, MY16 ?) the TCCM is hard against the inner guard under the brake lines, the glow plug module is in front of the air box. (so plenty of room to fit a compressor).
*D4 (last models) the horn is still over under the brake lines all of it squished up together.

I dont know that I would be overly keen on moving the TCCM in the drivers side box to under the brake lines as it makes getting to it a complete dog.
I've replaced 2 failed ones.

Arent the newer ARB compressors ok for in car use? as in I remember the old ones used to smell of oil and stink out the car.

That pic is a factory position of the later D4. the horn can been seen, the alloy bracket with the right angle top over the TCCM plastic cover can be seen and the glowplug module is no where to be seen as its in front of the air box

Yes. Mine lives under a false floor where the third row seats used to be. Noisy, but not smelly.

Forum member LRD414 (Scott) has made an excellent video which documents his expedition build (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXBUU7j3dVo)
From 11.10mins you can see where he placed his ARB compressor under the passenger seat.
Best, Jeffoir.

My drivers side box has the TCCM black box adjacent the the engine side box wall.

A thread that i found by "sctsprin" showed pictures of the exact same install but I cannot seem to reference the thread.

The ARB compressor sits neatly in between the TCCM Module and the Brake ABS hardware.

A base plate utilising existing various 6mm rivet type screw threads in the base of the box secures the unit.

I will place a quick connect fitting with dust seal on the front bull bar and the isolation switch in the vehicle near the driver door.

I won't need to open the bonnet - just get the 6m hose etc and clip and go.

I did have a twin ARB in its case secured onto of the draw system at rear of the vehicle and used it for 11years before it died.

Having the compressor concealed in the engine bay and not taking room in the vehicle is a big plus for me.

Thanks for all your input and ideals.

If i had a D4 i would hinge the LH fake intake grille and put an air fitting in there and possibly a switch.

Clever idea. Or you could put a little mini bar in there. You know, with those little bottles you get in hotels. How cool.

Is the thinking here that ARB are superior quality or smaller for the space? Are the Supercheap XTM brand regarded as no good?

Their size is their advantage, and maybe they’re better made, but you can’t go past the big piston ones like the Kings one for speed. They can move a heck of a lot of air. That said, with our smaller tyres it’s less of an issue. I use a Kings and I can get all four tyres up from 12psi quicker than the typical patrol next to me with their 33”. Less volume, high flow. I’d still go something like an ARB though as I do get sick of having to ps l the compressor each time and the fiddling.
