Some time back my stock knob failed and I replaced it with an ebay cheapy-ish 'fit one fit all' type of thing along these lines (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/323524047572?fits=Model%3ADefender&hash=item4b538932d4:g:3PAAAOSwlKhgh5O~).

Unsurprisingly that's now broken and I'm looking for an affordable replacement that might last.

The various metal alloy versions out there seem OK on the face of it (aside from being way too expensive) but surely they'd get really hot?

So that leaves me with getting a replacement OEM style from somewhere like here (https://www.4wdindustries.com.au/land-rover-defender-r380-5-speed-manual-gearbox-ge) for $31 shipped or... any other / better ideas?

I have got used to mine rotating & being loose. I have thought of using a large nutsert & maybe Araldite to be sure, but I'm yet to get motivated.

I bought one Oct 2021 from Karcraft - BTR9270 <B> $9.44+GST + freight.

I still have it on the shelf, as I ended up filing a small amount from the 'points' of a 1/2UNF nut (that I had) , and lightly hammered it into the knob (interference fit), you can resurrect a knob with a stuffed thread that is otherwise OK. Been fine for the last few months at least.

I'm sure someone else recently had same problem and had to fit a knob with the shift pattern on it to get it registered.

Ring a bell anyone?

link to one you'd recommend?

So you didn't buy the same for your transfer knob?

They are both solid alloy and you can get them in silver or black... I went silver

Should be all over ebay or Amazon I would think...

Ring a bell anyone? It is an ADR requirement for the gear pattern to be displayed.
I don't know if it has to be in the gear knob, I work with a young bloke who defected, not long ago, for his after market gear knob.
I can only assume he failed the initial attitude test [emoji6]

My TombRaider has a metal knob that gets cold in winter but not hot at all, not even in summer. Looks good, doesn't break and is the icing on the cake (so to speak).

Should be available in your neck of the woods as well somewhere.
Cheers mate!

I have silver one installed. But I needed to remove it. I used one of those plumbers white tape and blue thread locker . It is solid but still removable.

This old hose fitting works well. Surprisingly comfortable, and developing a nice patina.

I spent probably too much money but am very happy with these heritage units from MUD UK.

The gear shifter is noticeably smaller than the original which took a bit of getting use to but I prefer it now.

The original looks good and feels good in the hand. Just clean out the inside, drill 80% of the depth a couple of mm larger and clean the thread and then use builders bog to fill it and put it back on. Clean the bit that’s coming out of the hole and It’ll never come loose again. Reason for only drilling 80% of the depth is that the remaining bits will locate the thing.

Did mine in a similar manner after last clutch change. Silastic which ever one you choose will hold it adequately.

Yep, the first thing I thought of was that this would represent the leaks in my old 110 really well... [thumbsupbig]

as for Defender Heritage Gear shifter knobs – MUD-UK (https://www.mudstuff.co.uk/products/defender-heritage-gear-shifter-knobs?_pos=1&_sid=1316b7110&_ss=r)
They are more expensive and it's not clear if made from metal or plastic.
