G’day all.

In rebuilding the horn i am struggling with where the new loom attaches. I assume there were some connections that have been removed but not sure and can’t find any guidance online. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220322/63529628c335d377da9acec457aa90a8.jpg

I am not clear what the issue is. The horn connects to a branch off the "dash harness" with brown and brown/black wires. Polarity is in fact immaterial, neither is earthed, and it should work either way.

Electrically, the brown wire goes via the harness to the battery terminal on the starter switch (up to suffix 'C') or the battery terminal on the starter solenoid, and the brown/black lead to the horn switch, via the harness, which earths the wire when the button is pressed. Note that the horn is unfused.

Thanks for that. My issue is that I can see where on the physical horn they attach ?

Ah! Sorry, I could work that out if the horn was in my hands, but that horn is not identical to any of the ones in my manuals and it is not obvious from the picture.

The horn should have a coil of wire making a solenoid, and one end of that will be connected to a one side of a set of contacts that open when the coil has a current through it. The two wires need to connect to the end of the coil that is not connected to the contacts, and the other wire to the contact that is not connected to the coil. Neither side should be connected to the frame of the horn; it is possible that this is an unsuitable horn that has one side of the circuit intended to be via the frame. In this case it would be necessary to insulate the horn from its mount.

It must be a early series 2 looking at that horn i have the same but it’s boxed away will try to look tomorrow by memory the wires either go thru the cap onto contacts inside or connect j
outside of horn

The bullet connectors don't connect into the horn.
There are wires soldered into place, I can see where one goes but not sure about the other, I'll have to see if I have a spare horn to have a look.
The wires exit the horn and have bullet connectors on the ends, you then join to the bullet connectors in your picture.

These horns were used on late Series 1s and Series 2s. On mine the bullet connectors just push in.

Just found one down the back shed and as BSF statea, the bullet connectors push in as shown.

Hi

I would also add a fuse to the horn wiring (which comes straight off the battery).

I did not and when I got a short it went through the horn.

Not original / not correct, but an improvement in the name of safety. (Others might not agree).

Where do you stop though ?
Do you fuse every part of the system ?

My Series I still has a single fuse. The fabric on the wiring has broken down and the rubber insulation cracked & perished.
You can almost see the electrons traveling through the wires !

Problem is that it's so heavily modified that re-wiring would be a mammoth task. Instead I carry a fire extinguisher.
