The headlining in my disco 2 needs replacing, I have tried every upholster in the Wollongong area and no one wants to do it. I’m now looking for recommendations for someone in the southern Sydney area to do the job, preferably someone that’s actually done a disco before. Any help would be appreciated.

I was investigating getting the car roof lining of my D3 replaced, the guy below quoted around $1000.00 for roof and A pillars.
I spoke to Sydney car roof linings, if he was willing to come to me he may go to you.

And if you muck it up its not overly expensive to have another go. Ive done at least 10 cars now and the found the disco one of the easier ones to get the headlining out of, most important part is the glue to get the material to stick on the curved edges.
Another option is to remove and install the liner yourself and get a trimmer to re-cover it. I reckon that removing and installing is their biggest concern and time killer considering how many trim pieces there are to remove and install. If you DIY it's a good opportunity to install some round deadener on the roof, made a big difference for me with the V8
Good luck

Its' a DIY world out there at the moment (too much free money around... no workers)
As LRJim said a pretty easy job. I ripped / cut the back Half of my head lining and substrate out - no way will I put it back in.
without the side trims in the back and minus headlining the amount of extra room is astonishing. Head linings are for girls.
My d2 is a basher / workhorse though... YMMV

There used to be a place in Auburn that sold headlining material.
I was lucky with mine as upholstery bloke in Gosford was retiring and had some Commodore liner same colour (almost) as D2 left over.
I removed the headlining at his shop and he did it professionally for AFAIR $200 or so.
Note that the D2 headlining is wider than most material and there are only some selections that fit.
I have no sunroof and had the drop down screens removed and covered.

You need 2m wide lining to fit the rear and avoid a join.
here’s an option I looked at a while back
Montana Felt - Daley's auto, marine & upholstery supplies (http://www.daleys.com.au/shop/fabrics/headlining-fabrics/montana-felt/)

Had mine done recently, bloke didn't want to touch it until I told him I was taking it out, then he was perfectly happy to do it, apparently they are a pain the remove and refit but if you do it yourself is easier to find someone, though they did use a felt material because the regular material roll is too narrow and the wider one is hard to come by, might be worth the ask before going to far from home.

So what's the right brand/type glue to get? I will only be doing mine so if you can suggest a quantity for 1 disco lining as well that would be nice. cheers

There are many contact adhesives as you will no doubt find out, but it needs to be high temp - the roof of the car is a heatsink - there is a place that may be useful for their spray adhesive. They also do heat shield materials which is worth watching on the website

Get it in the can because you need a nice even coat and it sprays out like spider webs. The drum you need to run it through a special spray gun to get the same effect, I've tried brushing it on but it can soak through the material if pressed too hard and doesn't grab when it's applied thick. Generally 1 can is enough for most cars but I'd get at least 2 for the disco because it's a larger area to cover. Don't use kwik grip in a can or drum from bunnings etc, it dosnt grab like other brands do and dosnt withstand the heat. I've heard good things about 3M super77 brand but never have used it personally, I've always used what the motor trimmer has in stock as its guaranteed to work, it's generally cheaper than mainstream hardware/auto stores and better quality also.

If doing it your self, this link might help.
I did mine using the 2 meter wide material mentioned before, ie. Montana felt. does not have the 'foam' backing.
The foam breaks down over time and is why it falls down.
The common rolls seen on ebay etc. are not wide enough for a D2./D1.

This glue 3M was recommended by Daley's when purchasing the material, two cans needed.
Two years since, and looking great.

I understand why there is a reluctance for auto trimmers to do work on these vehicles. Having had my D2 hood liner done a number of times every part about the job becomes a liability for the installer as all the plastic trim components become extremely brittle, the hood liner shell gets to point of basically disintegrating the second row nets are essentially old stretched undies with broken elastic and somehow there seems to be a general belief by clients that the vehicle when it was dropped off was like new! I do not envy these guys or the agro they go through for such a small dollar value and admittedly simple job.
My auto trimmers are at the point they will not do any more Discos however my 1994 &96 Jeep XJs they will do without any questions or problems at all.
My experience with the D2 is if you can pull the hood shell out and clean it yourself then drop off to auto trimmer you will have a lot better and more cost effective outcome.
Cheers
