Maybe he thought that he could get mobile phone reception by collecting the phone box[bigwhistle][bigrolf]

I could jokingly suggest it was just a failed ram raid for the coinage in the machine and the County driver is a retired school teacher, but I saw a similar booth at Hattah in northern Vic last week that said all calls within Oz were free, courtesy of Telstra.
Back there next week for a fish survey, might take a pic.

Yes, when I worked for telstra I spent 10 years , installing and repairing payphones, and then later pulling out payphones as mobile phones came into vogue, I'm talking 25 -30 years ago now , even then it would have been cheaper to make calls free, as vandalism and repairing coin mechanisms cost more than they earned.
