D3 Radio Replace / Upgrade

MY06 D3 SE owned since new and little things are finally starting to crap themselves. A couple of buttons have fallen off the radio and, as we all know, LR don’t sell $1 parts just $600 total replacements. Therefore I’m looking to swap out the radio and I’m technical enough to DIY. I’ve seen a number of posts over the years discussing this and am interested in something like this

Has anyone done this and was it easy. Does it work or are there any other suggestions. I don’t have or need steering wheel controls but like the idea of hands free and some of the other features.

Maybe my fuel guage will work again when done 😂😂

Aepro and Connects2 offer kits for installing aftermarket headhunts in and connecting into the factory systems such as steering wheel controls.
Personally I'd recommend an Alpine headunit for their high quality. Pioneer I'd avoid as I've found while they look great they don't perform well. Value for money is often found in Kenwood or JVC (JVC being owned by Kenwood and sold as their lower tier offering) products.

Hi Mando,

I had this problem with my 05 S, which I managed to fix with some 1mm SS wire U's to replace the broken plastic U's. That said, I'm not sure if your SE radio is the same as the base spec on my S, but it might work. Just did a forum search and found my 2017 post on the fix by entering 'radio button fix' in the advanced search box in the top right of the page, it has a description and images. Its still working fine to this day, as is the rest of the astonishing vehicle at 521,000 km.

Good luck with it, hope it works for you and saves you $600.

Has anyone done this and was it easy.

I'm currently in a similar situation. I've fitted Android head units in the past and it was fairly straight forward but some soldering may be required. Unless you can find a head unit that makes a wiring harness for the D3 you'll probably need a universal.

Android head units: Pros: $$$Cost - far better value for money. Heaps of functionality, can download and install the Hema maps app and it will run fine. They will run all the Android apps that you would have on your phone. Cons: Audio not as good as the big brand head units. Quality control can be an issue with some units.

Big Brand units: Pros: Superior audio quality. Cons: Crap, low-res display, gimped functionality. I've currently got an Alpine ILX-702D in another car a while the audio is great, the rest of it is crap.

If you want Hema maps on a big brand unit you'll be looking at spending around 3K for the Alpine unit.

If you're going to go for an Android HU make sure you get one with the latest/fastest processor and most RAM, otherwise they can be a bit of a dog booting up and running apps. Android head units literally are like having a computer in your car.

I have just replaced the LR unit with a Kenwood. Have been thinking about the android units for while. Decided I did not need to run a gps in it and it was really in the wrong place. You can get android units to fit inplace of teh original Nav unit if you want. Might do that later.

The radio had turned to crap and the old hands free was dying. There are cheap Kenwood DPX-5200's at the moment, under $200. Does what I need except fix the radio, still bad. In the process of putting a GME AM/FM antenna on the bull bar rather than chasing the antenna issues.
