Total camera noob, ok?

I think I would like a proper camera to take pics on our trip, so scenery and utube quality video?
As Diane will be doing the in-car video, total auto everything.. [bighmmm]

As always, any advice, kind words, warnings, rude words appreciated.. [smilebigeye]

Yes, just how long is that piece of string?
less than 4 figures long,

I will revisit this after I see just what Emerald has on its shelves..

Probably debatable, but when it comes to a tight budget and for point and shoot photography, a typical phone takes pictures of more than adequate quality these days.

As for video, an action cam like a go pro or dji osmo action with a few accessories ticks a lot of boxes.

Other than that, a mirrorless camera with integral zoom lens is probably best bang for the buck for a dedicated photo and video device.

In any event, aim for at least 4k video quality. I don't think photo resolution is that great a deal now as everything has way more than most people need.

Pedro, just watch the zoom focus on the camera, when videoing. My memory fails me on brand, but someone I know bought a well known brand, expensive camera and in certain conditions, whilst videoing, the focusing would get confused.

I'm happy with my old Fuji S4000, but I'm definitely no photographer and use a GoPro for vids.
I'll be following your trip with interest.

p.s. isn't Inc. a bit of a photophile?

While doesn’t match your budget, we opted for a SONY RX10 35-600 zoom meaning we don’t have to chance lenses all the time.

Seems to be taking good pics in auto mode, haven’t tried video yet.

We need to study the manual a bit.

I have a digital SLR with L glass, and really good point and shoot (Olympus Tough TG-5) and an iphone13. I think the iphone takes the best pics. But when on holidays I use the point and shoot as its super tough, dust/waterproof and also so the phone battery doesn't go flat, then just bluetooth to my phone any photos that I want to use before I get home. The DSLR doesnt get used any more.

Yes,DSLR's are going the way of the Dinosaur, mirrorless is the way now.

As for the OP's question,if the phone is no good,a good point and shoot maybe the go.Sony make a few different models. One of the leaders in mirrorless.

The next step up at huge cost is something like the Cannon R5,one of the best mirrorless around and excellent for videos.

The way cameras take photos and video now, I'd just upgrade the phone and go with that. As much as I hate to admit it, the phones are just incredible now. The iphone13 with Lidar is just insane in low light and in the dark.

I am a photographer :) it's all personal preference as well. Stick with the main brands, Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fuji, you will have a fantastic camera no matter which one.
I personally prefer my DSLRs over mirrorless, but mirrorless are lighter much easier to carry. But they are expensive, and lenses are expensive as generally the dslr range don't fit. Fuji and Sony have been running them for several years now so you'd even find a second hand one at a decent price.
Mobile phones are fabulous but they will never be the same quality as proper cameras and optical lenses. Working with both, the data just isn't there in phones and zoom isn't so good, and distortion. They have replaced point and shoot though quality wise.
For what you are looking for, Canon Powershot range might suffice. It's like a half way point between phone and dslr/mirrorless. They have good optical zoom (huge quality increase over digital zoom) and are light and easy to carry around. No multiple lenses required.

Lots of entry level dslr you can just pop a zoom lens on though and it would do a lot of things. Mirrorless you could also do this method. I run canon brand and love them.
As for gopro. I've got hero8 and it's awesome. Think newest model is hero9. So any you go will be great. They also have a gopro that is a 360 camera. Those are really cool!

Hi,
The best camera is the one you have with you.
So consider weight and size when planning. I have often got great photos that were only captured because the camera was accessible and fitted in a pouch on my belt.
Cheers

as generally the dslr range don't fit.

Great post and good advice.

One thing though, nearly all the older DLSR Canon lenses work on their new Mirrorless range, with an adapter and no decrease in picture quality, auto focus or tracking ability compared with using them on the DSLR range. This includes all the L series lenses.

Canon have also stopped making any more DSLR models.

Some people do like to see what they are actually photographing, not a digital image.
We have been looking at Mirrorless lately, although i do like the DSLR we have,ATM,but the Mirrorless is way ahead in many ways, and around half the weight.Which is important when carrying around prime lenses which are also very heavy.

Yes, adapter is a much cheaper option than changing lenses :)
Im a little concerned with camera brand decisions to cease dslr flagship cameras as the range of what is available for what someone needs. I'm sure there will end up being a range of mirrorless options to cover amateur to pro and a range that covers many different needs like we see in the dslr range. Here's hoping anyway! I've got 5dmk3 and 1dx. Heavy pieces of kit [emoji28] I use on a tripod or an adapter on my powerchair. So lightness of mirrorless will definitely be welcome as long as quality same or better [emoji41]

I loved our 5DMk3,it was an absolute cracker.Unfortunately it got drowned[bigsad][bigsad]
With the insurance money,we added, and bought the 1DXMk2,its also a cracker but,as you said very heavy. But better for BIF,birds in flight.

We will sell the 1DX shortly and replace it with a Cannon R3,around 2/3 of the weight of the 1DX,with many more features, similar or slightly better quality. The R5 is half the weight of the 1DX,but doesnt suit our needs as much as the R3.

Still waiting to win lotto, then i can get a 600mm[bighmmm][wink11]

Yes,there is a concern about DSLR being dropped, one of my brothers does digital printing, and he wont change, has tested the mirrorless, but doesnt like them.He uses top of the range Nikon and Fuji gear.

Anyway,it would be good to see some of your pics, maybe in the camera corner area?[smilebigeye]

GoPro Hero9 met all expectations.

just thinking about this thread, I must say though, that I like the post about “best camera is the one that you have with you…” the quality and reliability available now is so good.
we’re up at our daughters farm, west of Dubbo for Easter. The sunset this evening was spectacular. I grabbed a few pics with the iPhone 11 from my front pocket. I’m a very happy Chappy. “ enough said..”

Given the parameters talked about--
how fast an SD card do I need?
also how big?
given a 512gb card is the price of the camera...

16g goes a bloody long way if shooting in JPG mode and is still very usable with RAW if you process daily

128gb is more than most ever need when traveling and doing regular cleanups

camera specs will specify the recommended sd card class. 4k video will gobble up storage, but even a 64gb card will hold plenty of minutes.

I always prefer to keep cards smaller, either 32 or 64 gb, and have a few as then if one fails, you won't lose as much. Video you might need 128 gb though. And transferring to computer is a bit easier.
The fastest cards are best for cameras too, extreme or extreme pro being fastest :)

My 1dx is the mk2 :) mine are all second hand 1dx was a bargain, it didn't work but I managed to fix it! My lenses are old as well, they are what I hope yo upgrade next.
Can definitely share some of my work in the camera corner. I cover horse events (less now as I'm sick of in accessible toilets. Should be wheelchair accessible loos everywhere in this day and age)
And a few commercial clients.
Then my own fun and creative things:)

Cannon offers the G series a descent advanced compact camera. It offers a very good image quality, acceptable zoom range and a light compact size.

On the downside the lens is not super fast, the camera is not weather proof and has a high price tag.
