try locking and unlocking while someone pulls on the tailgate.

Might be messy, but presuming you can get into the rear compartment via the back doors.

Oh, I have heard that if the actuator is on the way out, then it could be that slightly lower battery voltage can be a problem. Ensure battery is fully charged.

I had the same experience and saw on this forum to press the tailgate release button and the remote unlock at the same time. Worked for me. I had been planning to have it looked at at the next service due in a few weeks after a few false starts but it beat me to it. Had new parts fitted within a few days at my indy who fitted me in at short notice.

Could be the upper tail gate hasp is a bit loose ; pull like blazes, then check everything is in its correct place and tighten.

I reckon it’s the actuator giving you warning of its imminent failure.
I think you should just replace the actuator. I had both my upper actuator and latch replaced last year. Each item cost $104.

Same here last year. Actuator failing.
Easy enough to replace DIY - video instructions on YouTube.

If it is playing up now, then I would strongly recomend that you install a a manual release cable tomorrow!!! For free

There are videos on Youtube.

You can then choose your price point to fix the actuator afterwards.

I would then leave the manual release, just because...
