I've seen some older posts where people found it quite complicated to get transmission fluid temp readings without going the full GapIID route/cost.

FWIW, I purchased the cheap and cheerful OBD2 bluetooth reader for $42 : OBD2 With Bluetooth iPhone & Android – OBD2 Australia (https://obd2australia.com.au/product/obd-aus-bluetooth-scan-tool-obd2-scan-tool/)

After some searching online, I installed this free program on my android phone: Car Scanner ELM OBD2 – The best car OBD2 diagnostic solution for iOS and Android in your pocket! (https://www.carscanner.info/). The program seems quite good, and in the setup there's an option to select your car type/model, which includes a 3.0L D4.

Having done so, I was expecting to spend some frustrating time trying to add a transmission fluid PID. However, as I worked through setting up some basic info, I noticed a mis-spelt 'automatik transtmissin fluid temp' sensor in its list of already available options.

Et voila!

(ignore the value readings - this has been quickly snapped disconnected, but you get the idea. And it all appears fully functional from an initial test drive.)

Hope this may help anyone else wanting such values without necessarily wanting to spend lots of dosh,,,

Oh - and the OBD2 module is nicely small. -sits very discretely out of harm's way, no risk of kicking it unless you regularly perform violent yoga in the driver's seat of your car...)

It’s an amazing and cheap little bit of kit. I’ve also got a Subaru and VW in the family and you can plug in to everything. Tiny size as you say.

If you change the trans fluid on a normally warm day by the time you’ve cycled the gears and faffed around getting under the car and pumped more in it is pretty quickly above 35C and a long time till you hit 50C without driving it.
