When I was a child I saw one pulling up the hill on the south side of the Hawkesbury . AFAIK this is one of the steepest grades in NSW.

They were one of the most powerful steam locos operated in Australia, and unlike some of their close rivals in this regard (e.g.D57, which was too high axle load and too wide for most lines or the Victorian H class, which also had too high an axle loading and was too wide and too high to operate on any line except Melbourne - Albury)) the AD60 class could operate on almost any line in the state. Some were fitted for running in either direction, to make it easier for those lines with no turntable long enough.

They were also the last NSW steam loco to continue in regular service if I remember rightly, mostly in the west of the state.

I gave serious consideration to driving up there this weekend to take some photos. The first run up Tumulla bank would be worth watching but I'm sure someone will put it up on youtube.

I live quite close to the Bethungra spiral, and would love to see it going round that. I'll have to watch out for any event down this way.
