View Full Version : Old Spice "Classic" No Longer Available in Australia

Hello All,

In case you have been waiting for Old Spice Classic (Original Round Stick Formula) roll-on deodorant to reappear on the supermarket shelves the news is bad. I had thought the bare supermarket shelf space in the deodorant section might have been due to some COVID related ingredient supply issues, or that somewhere a delayed cargo ship full of Old Spice "Classic" was bobbing around in the ocean while on its way to Australia. I contacted the distributor and was informed in Australia Old Spice "Classic" has not been available in Australia since November 2021 and it has been discontinued. So much for over three decades of brand loyalty from some of its consumers - such as me.

There are some re-sales companies overseas who are offering multiple units however the postage/freight is a real killer. In Australia Old Spice does have a new roll-on called "Swagger" it has less volume and is dearer than the "Classic" used to cost - go figure! So far I have only found the new product Swagger in Woolworths.

Kind regards
Lionel

The same could be said of the whole forum. Consider it more of an announcement for change averse individuals.

I wonder why no company ever came up with a 'Trevor Chappell' label deodorant? [bighmmm]

Hello All,

I was not going to suggest that Land Rover make a personal hygiene product like a deodorant because they have already ignored customer loyalty by discontinuing the Defender. A "First World problem" - how many pages of forums were devoted to the abhorrent act of no new Defenders? Plus, the deodorant product would leak out of the container and leave territorial marks everywhere, especially if it was sold as a "Classic" (Series) product.

Kind regards
Lionel

Quite a few new Defenders around now.

They smell different and their owners don't have beards.

This is terrible news.

I mean, admittedly I haven't come into contact with an Old Spice product since around 1988, when somebody gave me some aftershave (I think I still have it: never was one for aftershave), but Old Spice has always been there. I could never have said for sure that I wasn't suddenly going to turn into a sworn, dyed-in-the-wool, rusted-on Old Spice deodorant-user......and now that option is closed to me forever. It's just gone - and I'm really feeling it.

Still, on the bright side.... I still have my stash of Ultrabrite toothpaste (the real stuff, containing Toluene or Benzine or cocaine or tapeworm eggs or Radium or whatever was in it - not the recent poor imitation) which I stockpiled in the late 90s....and the sack of Dunlop Volleys which I wisely collected a few years before that. They said I was mad, but who's mad now, eh??? Ehh?? Eh?? Ehhhhhh????

I wonder what I might get for my aftershave...?

P.S. My freezer-full of Golliwog biscuits eventually got eaten.

Hello Johnno,

No not exactly terrible news - Old Spice have not left the scene entirely. They replaced the "Classic" with a new product "Swagger' as pictured. I am sure you will sleep easier now.

In the early 80s I worked for Cyanamid Aust, who were based in Seven Hills NSW. The company produced all the Old Spice products and Blue Stratos to name a few in house. Baz

Too right and they stay on with the laces removed, for easy donning and shedding.[thumbsupbig]

On topic a bit: Sales of Dior's "Sauvage", advertised using Johnny Depp, have really taken off since his court cases began. Another company dropped him like a hot spud. They may be ruing that?

Hey Lionel,

Thanks for letting me know. At least that gives me an option. Mind you, I am always a little wary of what might be cynical re-branding in the smoke and wreckage of the fall of a treasured and venerable institution. Like the Tsarist Empire or Hey Hey It's Saturday.

Am I, could I be, a "Swagger Man"?? I'll have to give it some thought. Maybe practice a bit.

Maybe ask myself "Is This The Best A Man Can Get......?"

Yeah, absolutely. Never been another shoe like it.

I was lucky, actually. I got a hot tip-off from a fellow in-the-know at Iggulden's Menswear in Tully sometime in the mid-late 90s that changes were coming in the Dunlop Volley Universe. Factories moving offshore, different materials for the sole (which in a Dunlop Volley also amounts to soul)....all sorts of argmageddon scenarios.

So, I decided "Armageddon as many pairs of the old ones as I can right now...!"

I bought about 8-10 pairs and stashed them in an old US Mail sack*. I just wish I'd bought more. I should have bought twenty pairs, as I guess I could have still managed to eat. Over the years, I have had to ration myself carefully (Volleys, that is - not food).

Meanwhile, the One True Volley disappeared from the landscape, only to be succeeded by a pale imitation. Cries of outrage over the new, less-grippy composite soles could only just be heard over the din of roofers everywhere crashing earthward.

As I understand it, there was/is a "Classic" Volley rebranding sold alongside the much-devalued and debased base-model. Something that (I seem to remember) may have restored the glory of a decent all-rubber sole....but they were expensive, the Old Reliable was gone and the damage was done....

John

The Solvol bar was discontinued some time back ... I made the move to 'liquid' solvol (big pump pack at Bunnings and I'm sure other places) ... and while I was initially sceptical, I've found it to be an adequate replacement - it's still 'gritty'. I'll be getting through a bit of it as I replace the front rotors this weekend!

I'm saving all remaining 'bar' supplies for my camping stash - yes I take it camping too.

Didn't Steve Moyes (sp?) the hang glider from Sydney get sponsored by Blue Stratos?

I met him years after when he was involved with an ultralight mob.

Solvol still available in a liquid form.

Definitely not the same as the cake of pumice impregnated soap.

Paired with the smell of stale Bundy rum cans and diesel soot, and you got yourself a recipe for success.

Have you tried to buy Junket Tablets lately I managed to find 6 packets earlier this year in one Coles store near us after our local checked stock in other stores . When I asked at service desk no one knew what they were , fortunately they contacted there store room & girl in there knew what whey were . When she bought them out she said they had been taken off the shelf because they could not get them.

A bar of good ol' Sunlight soap, once it's got a bit of moisture in it, rubbed in some clean sand or grit, is a good Solvol substitute.

Quite an interesting coincidence that you should mention that right now. This evening I had dinner with some elderly neighbours and was part of a conversation involving the words "junket", "rennet" and "flummery" for the first time in about thirty years.

Mind you, this is still not getting anybody any closer to solving the Old Spice problem.

On an entirely personal note, this thread keeps piling coincidence upon coincidence. I was actually just about to suggest Lynx Africa as a viable replacement for those going through Old Spice withdrawal. I couldn't comment upon its olfactory effect when combined with rum and diesel soot, but can confidently assert that, if used as directed, it smells better than the back end of Mogadishu on a Saturday night.

My dear wife has a 'Rellie' of sorts, several times removed, who must use half a bottle of 'Old Spice' pre-socialising. The last time we met him, he gave my wife a quick hug.
Three hours later, when jumping into the D3, to head home, I could still smell it on my wife. She said she had trouble not gagging during the short embrace![biggrin]

I wonder what he's going to do?
Every cloud has a silver lining, ay!

Once had the 'good fortune' to be home when the truck came to pump out the septic tank at home. I heard the truck pull up outside and smelt the diesel exhaust when I opened the door to meet and greet and point out where the tank was. I was then overwhelmed by a combined vapor cloud of old spice mixed with Brut 33. He explained on asking, that he had drenched his work overalls collar in old spice and his hat and gloves in brut 33 to over-smell the stink of the open tank and pump-out operation.

This is about the only justifiable reason I can think of for using either in the combined attack on the olfactory senses.

the advertising budget for old spice, blue stratos and not to forget brut33 must've been pretty good.

it wouldn't cost much to make... is it methyl ethyl alcahol...which is cheap , plus some smelly esters?

I suppose you have that option when it never gets over 22 celsius.

Spend a week in Darwin with 44 and 90% humidity. The swamp-arse will have you change your mind pretty quick.

I used to "Need Uncle Sam" but when that went the way of the Dodo I moved to Old Spice.
Then about 15 years ago, after using it since she had meet me, SWMBO told me she didn't really like the small of it.
So, my life shattered, I said she could pick my bloody deodorant then!
So now I use Mum.

That would a take off from Not The Nine O’clock News where Rowan Atkinson, as a French sounding shop assistant, asks “boll or arosol”? To which the answer came ”neither, I want it for my armpits”.

Hi Lionelgee

I have been less smelly running or not using 195509

There are a few different versions. The Sports works for me. Online in packs of 6 last years I suspect. My sons and some influencers apparently started the change to this format. My almost shock at the price of the supermarket prices for spry cans that last about month or so makes me smile a bit when I see that.

Google for "old spice pure sport" was hijacked by BING which gave me this list (https://www.bing.com/search?pglt=299&q=old+spice+pure+sport&cvid=3cdfda8c18c14e2ea24b3568617d7938&gs_lcrp=EgRlZGdlKgYIABBFGDkyBggAEEUYOTIGCAEQABhAMg YIAhAAGEAyBggDEAAYQDIGCAQQABhAMgYIBRAAGEAyBggGEAAY QDIGCAcQABhAMgYICBBFGD3SAQg2MTIwajBqMagCALACAA&FORM=ANNTA1&PC=DCTS)

The Amazon recent delivery to my door was a bit of a shock as Aus Post doesn't come to my place. Happily the General Store/post office is the only place to hang out here apart from the Beach[bigrolf][bigrolf][bigrolf]
