at least not as quick as the owners thinks they are
Heading north out of Murrurundi on the New England Hwy there is a 60km/h fixed speed camera at the base of the range. About 200m past it the road divides into dual lanes, then the 100km/h zone starts another 100m futher on. The hill rises about 250m from the camera and it is 3km to the the crest.

Anyway, I cruise through the speed camera right on 60km/h and don't start to accelerate untill the road splits into dual lanes. Old mate in the Hilux has a run up and pulls out to pass. I don't flatten the Landy till he is along side and he gets half a car length ahead. As I hit 100km/h I start to pull back alongside and continue to drive away from him to the top of the hill, where I'm about 500m ahead. Oh, and I have about 400kg of gear in the tray, let alone the bull bar, winch, side rails and steps, etc . :D

Going down the other side both the driver and pasenger have a real good look, (yep, only a 2.5l 300Tdi) and they have less gear on board than me.

Oh what a feeling and Get out of the way !

Mate I drive a Navara 3.0tdi for work (no intercooler) and find I'm continually thinking the Defender goes better especially up hills.

Yep realy annoys most of the diesels I commute with. They all nail it past me on the two real hills and wonder why they still end up behind me while I merrily cruise at the same speed all the way.

Interesting - seems to be a common occurrence. Boofhead driving something-or-other pulls out to pass at the bottom of a hill then gets pegged back on the sustained climb. I noticed it the other week-end heading up the range to Toowoomba. 80km/h speed limit, but you'd be surprised how many other vehicles run out of puff towards the top - and they start off at 120km/h at the bottom. Meanwhile the Defender just plugs away at 80 as it gets steeper and steeper - mind you, you can watch the fuel gauge needle going down at the same time...

Yeah i have had that happed to me. A young P-plater would pass me when ever it was flat but when ever we got to a hill his old lux would die and we would breeze past him. Gotta love it. matt

I found almost without fail that if there is a Yota driver waiting at an intersection and We come along in the Landy, Not only will they pull out but if we pass them on the flat stuff they will tail gate. OR if you pull out onto the road and they are miles back - before long you will find the Yota badge pretty much filling your mirrors.

It's obviously a size thing.

Have you ever known a Jap driver to be able to sit behind a Landy for any length of time. They will ALWAYS over take and sit 10m in front.

Yes noticed that mate, i passed one one day and he busted his **** to get back in front of me before the overtaking lane ended, in the end i let him go cause it was safer to be behind him than in front. Plus i dont want him getting all upset by me big "Land Rover The Best 4x4xfar" sticker in the rear window, thats usually why they pass me after i pass them. Matt :D

Yeah I love being on a trip and another 4wd driver almost drops there jaw when you power up a hill past them with a trailer on. The only 4wd's that get past the TD5 on hills are the petrol v8's and even then you can hear them reving the guts out of the engine just to get past you.

Oh this sounds oh so familiar...

Driving to Adelaide one day I had a LX470 (Liksar*e) tailgating me.
He pulled out, planted it and passed me (I was doing around 116km/h) with his 2 boofhead mates in the vehicle, all their riding gear and a trailer full of Chook Chasers...

Passes me then slows to 105km/h

We hit a hill with an over taking lane and he drops speed, I pull out, accelerate to 115km/h and over the hill I go..... Him disappearing into the distance

Only to have him 5 minutes later back up my behind. He pulls out again, passes me and again slows to 105km/h.

So this time on the flat I wait for the overtaking lane and pass him (or so I thought) he accelerates to match me whilst I'm in the flat ground overtaking lane.

I backed off and sat behind, him and his mates looking back with smug looks on their faces...

Next hummock is about 5kms long so I sat behind, and at the opportune time Hit the throttle in the passing lane... Nothing like a chipped TD5... 120, 125, 130km/h.... He soon gave up (could hear the Lexus revving like mad and going nowhere)....

Crested the hummock and cruised back to 115km/h...

Sure enough once over the hill, here he comes....

Prepared for him this time we got to an overtaking lane and out he came.

Couldnt resist.... Back to 4th... Nail it.... Boost jumped to 19psi and off she went... Up to 5th.....

LX 470 struggling, faces not so amused I pulled back in front of the POS...

Then laughed....I pulled into Pt Wakefield servo, grabbed an Iced Coffee and drove off... They were still at the pump when I left.....

Some people just feel inferior when in the presence of a Defender

Cheers

Yes - happens a lot, bunch of silly buggers obviously have something to prove:confused:.
My 'fender is not "fully" chipped but can hold it's own up a hill, much to the annoyance of other makes. Is'nt it just amazing how they always have to be just in front? Mostly i just let them go - shame, poor things:(:o
OOOOOOHHH, i love landies ('specially defenders):p

That's an interesting story.
Something must be wrong, cause those things (LX470) go VERY well.
I reckon they didn't know how to drive!

Get the same thing in the disco. :)

I am amased at how quickly some of the jap stuff dies in the ****. It is most enjoyable when you can hold your cruise speed up the hills(most hills) towing your van, while the jap stuff starts belching smoke and reving its guts out.

And yet I often get told that landies are so under powered with that little 2.5 lt pulling 2.5 tonne.

Difference is con you probably don't overtake and slow down but actually drive sensibly.

I will often slow down when there is an overtaking lane to let them all pass. I still have to hit the brakes at the end as the little hill (We are talking 3 car lengths of any real rise) still catches most of the traffic out.

I'm so happy, I thought it was just me and that there was something wrong with me!!!

If you think Toymotor drivers have problems, try overtaking the poor sap who buys a Ssangyong. Now there is a person who really doesn't have the money to run, let alone own any large vehicle. Serious, serious penis envy:D
I pass a guy in one of those rexton things. There is no-one in front of him and he doesn't want to go fast, and won't move to the left. So he speeds up to stop me frok overtaking but can't quite do it ( against a '77 RR, out of tune, rooted gearbox and on gas!!!! ) He drops behind and when he sees me held up by other slow traffic, he roars up and sits on my ****. He sees a gap on the left and takes it to block me as we are about to merge, I just want to go home a little quicker than the other driver, not interested in stuffing around. He see's a gap, goes for it, and floors his Ruxton. I go one lane further in 3rd and fly past him. What a roaring heap of fudge. I'd sooner get a Pajero than one of those things.
Why are these people like this?? They don't wan't to drive at your speed, but don't want you to go past, and if you do, they do anything to get back in front, and once in front, will slow down again.
Why, why, why.....

Yes... the climb up to Mt Tomah from the west on the Bell's Line of Road is a test...Providing you can time the application of throttle after getting around the bends and in the right rev range the Disco will get to the top with the best of them.

The followers are covered in soot:D :p ;)
