Alvey will cease manufacture this year and trade out stock.

Yep. 2017. I got shot out and got a stash of drag washers as backup, which I still have, as I have no bloody idea of their whereabouts!

I saw on TV last night Alvey are advertising their reels... It's as if nothing untoward is happening behind the scenes.

I have an old alvey sidecast in the shed somewhere that I have kept purely for nostalgic reasons.
Personally I much prefer to use eggbeaters and overhead reels because I consider them to be a far superior option to an alvey and they are also easier on the pocket to buy.
When I was a sprat everyone had at least one alvey reel because the eggbeaters on the market at that time were too expensive and unreliable, Overhead reels were insanely expensive back then as well.
All that changed when the Jap fishing gear manufacturer's started to mass produce decent reliable and importantly Affordable gear which made the non user friendly alvey reels dissapear from the vast majority of fisherfolks tackle boxes.

It IS a shame that alvey isn't dooing so well But if they cannot produce the reels that most fishers want at a competitive price I don't hold much hope for the survival of the company.

Alvey reels not 'User Friendly'???

I suppose some may struggle with the concept![smilebigeye]

Get some sand and saltwater in a spinning or worse still, an overhead type reel and then try and clean them. It takes a lot of work and careful work, with a decent overhead.
An Alvey is a hose clean and reel grease, if needed.

Problem with Alvey is they are made too good……like the never break or wear out.

I haven’t been across recent current price ing but I believe they are quite expensive these day.

Perfect reel for light gear angling……like bagging 50 whiting in a short session.

If you are left handed there is none better. Egg beater style are the work of the devil

You do know that handles on eggbeaters can be changed over so that they are either left or right handed[bigwhistle][bigwhistle]

Alveys are amazingly durable, but don't excel at too much else compared to other styles. And, unfortunately, durable doesn't cut it in today's throw away society.

Anyhoo, reel men use overhead reels.

Still using my Fathers 6" wooden Alvey,it would have to be 50yrs old,at least.Used them since i was a kid, still have the 4" bakerlite i had then. And the 8Ft Jarvis Walker two piece rod, with the mark on the cork handle at 13".If we brought a fish back that was smaller than that we got a kick up the clacker[bighmmm][biggrin].

It depends on the type of fishing that you do,we mainly do surf and estuary fishing without lures, and there is not much better for the job.
They need virtually no maintenance, dip in the sea while fishing, and a quick wash over with fresh water after a trip, all done.

I have noticed the handles on my 5" that SWMBO uses a lot are badly worn and need replacing.I got it for a birthday present, with a Mossops 10.5" 'Knockabout' rod, when i was a teen,so it would be well over 40yrs old.

My sons have gone to egg beaters, mainly because they fish with lures and braid line.

'Kockabout' rod,
My sons have gone to egg beaters, mainly because they fish with lures and braid line.

With all due respect to your sons, Scarry, I presume with their spinning reels, lures (soft plastics perhaps?) and braid, they would be using the 'Soft Kockabout' rod?
