Might be time to replace the steel cable on my winch. It got a kink in it during the last winch recovery I did (user error!). Any recommendations, was thinking Dyneema rope?

I have a Survey FFR with a Thomas PTO winch.

Thanks

I've got a T9000 which might have a slightly larger drum than the T8000. I've got 40 metres x 10mm Dyneema SK75 on it and there's still plenty of room for more rope. You'll need to file down the sharp edges on the drum cable guides before using rope (not completely, just enough to get rid of the sharpness). And you'll need one of those rope grabbers. Drifta have them for $25. ROPE GRABBER - Drifta Camping & 4WD (https://www.drifta.com.au/product/rope-grabber/)

Rope costs more than steel and you'll probably want to change to rope 'soft shackles' and 'snatch recovery ring(s)' instead of the old style snatch block adding a bit more expense. On the upside it'll save a considerable amount of weight not to mention being much safer.

My thoughts are that if you don’t use the winch a whole lot, then steel is better as you can have it just sit on there and it makes no difference as it ages, sits in the sun or whatever. If you’re out to play and are pulling the winch often enough and its a consumable like a strap might be, then Dyneema. I have both steel and Dyneema here, but I leave the steel cable on the vehicle and the Dyneema in a box to protect it.

If you are concerned with UV damage to the Dyneema rope fit one of these to the working end [thumbsupbig]

SWR is cheap and can handle a small kink or two.

I converted my PTO Winch onmy TD5 to Dyneema, bought 60m of rope, fitted 30m and carry a 30M extension.

I also run a custom ally hawse fair lead instead of rollers, I’d actually prefer rollers.

Rope fixed to drum the same way the steel rope is

I have had dyneema on mine for 5 years , no problems , nice to use .
I have a sock on the end , seems to help with wear & most likely with UV too .
