3.9 V8 intake manifold remove

So, flushed with success after replacing water pump on daily D1 V8.
I got stuck into my second Disco, same year, motor etc. Bought really cheap, unregistered and owner claimed liner slipped, so no go.
All was going well, up to the point of removing intake manifold and heads. basically to see what is wrong.

For the life of me, I cannot get the manifold off, all connections removed, fuel lines, electrics etc.
12 bolts for the manifold were barely finger tight, a bit strange, I thought.
but it is stuck tight, will try tomorrow and loosen all head bolts.

Today, I hooked up the engine hoist, run a strap under manifold and tried to lift. Well, front end of vehicle is one inch off the floor,
two of us jumping on wheels, no visible gaps to try and use chisel or whatever to prise off. I would have thought some gap for the gasket,
but no, tight metal to metal contact.

Any tricks that would help, would be very welcome. Have read some posts with similar issue, but none explained how they eventually got it.

Perhaps try tapping a thin paint scraper in-between the intake manifold and valley gasket/heads. Swearing while doing this seems to help too [wink11]

Sounds like the entire intake manifold has been glued down with silicone gasket glue. Research what glues are required when reassembling the intake manifold because it shouldn't be that hard to remove it. From memory I use a non-hardening sealant around the inlet ports and silicone gasket maker around the water jackets. Seals well and makes it much easier to remove.

Sometimes they can get jammed under the rocker covers. Are the rocker covers on or off?

yes rocker covers off, Yet another piece of Rover madness, 12 point 8mm bolts?, only 1/4 drive socket fits, all my 1/4 drive are 6 point Hmm.
sacrificed another ring spanner, cut it down to fit between intake stuff.

Not in a hurry with this one, no sign of sealant around edges. back on it's wheels this morning, engine mounts gave way or lift did.
It's just my donor car, but want to know what was wrong with motor. maybe sell some parts.

Regroup today and try again, staring at it while drinking beer did not work.

Just give it a whack with a rubber mallet or nylon hammer. You are not going to break anything.

Hi Philip,

no amount of hitting with plastic mallet, wood etc. budged it.

All done now, took a couple of hours, levering, rocking and wedging all around. Wow, it had been 'glued' on everywhere.
Gasket seems to be tin, and gasket goo was white and hard.
No wonder the bolts were not tight, didn't need to be.

On we go.
