View Full Version : FireFox Bookmarks

I use Firefox and have a number google finance bookmarks that display various stock market charts such as the ASX 200 etc. The latest update to Firefox has removed the charts from the google sites I look at. The sites work OK on Chrome but it is not something I use and I do not have the relevant bookmarks loaded on it - so the issue is related to Firefox and its update.

So I went back to an earlier version of Firefox - 100 - expecting the system would recognise Firefox would recognise a version was already loaded and take my bookmarks etc from the later version but it did a fresh install so I have lost my book marks.

I know that they should be hidden in the system somewhere but not sure in the Firefox program folder where do go searching for them.

Unfortunately I have been away from home for 5 weeks and did not bring my backup drive so no backup to load up.

So where should I look for my old bookmarks?

Thanks

Garry

It probably depends on the operating system, but mine are in /home/john/.mozilla/firefox/4ha6ix44default-release/bookmarkbackups

Or in the same path but with a different "default release" - one in mine is "mwad0hs.default"

This may suggest where to look!

Thanks to John and Dave.

Found the Bookmarks Backup and using Dave's link I followed the process through and restored the only backup file there (the links indicate there should be 15). Unfortunately that backup file does not contain any bookmarks.

Looks like the Firefox install has over written everything.

When I get back home I will copy all the pics, word and excel files I have updated while away to a separate drive and do a complete restore from my last main system backup a few weeks back.

Thanks for the attempted help - much appreciated.

doesnt firefox save them in the cloud somewhere? so a FF log-in on any new build will install them? I'm sure I've done that..

Hi Gary. This might be a bit cheeky but may work. Add a new browser other than Firefox or uninstall and reinstall. Most give the option as setting as default browser and also importing all bookmarks from other browser.

Microsoft Edge if set to default and restarted would do the same perhaps?

Is it win 10 or win 11? You might be able to roll back via

Uninstalling specific updates (computer does not fully boot into Windows) In severe cases, an update may cause your computer to not fully boot into Windows. Fortunately, you can uninstall a Feature or Cumulative update by booting into the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE). This process is straightforward, too.

Turn your computer on.
As soon as you see the Windows logo appear, press and hold the computer’s power button until it turns off.
Repeat this process two times.
Turn on your computer once more. Instead of seeing the Windows logo, your computer will boot into Windows RE.
When the Automatic Repair window appears, click the Advanced options button, then click Troubleshoot.
Click the Advanced options icon, select Uninstall Updates, and then select Uninstall latest quality update or Uninstall latest feature update.

Have not tried this myself so be careful to have a full back up before trying

good luck

Thanks for the advice but already tried that with Chrome.

Unfortunately the installation of earlier version of Firefox has removed everything - I confirmed this by following the links that Inc put up. The previous bookmarks in the backup file are not there and the only bookmarks there are the two involved in setting the new version of Firefox. When I import bookmarks from Firefox to Chrome there should be a range of backup bookmarks to choose from but they are no longer there.

Cheers

Are you sure something has not inadvertently created a new (and therefore different) profile. If so it might appear like you have lost your bookmarks.

Your old bookmarks may be in an old profile.

Firefox saves your personal information such as bookmarks, passwords and user preferences in a set of files called your profile (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data), which is stored in a separate location from the Firefox program files. You can have multiple Firefox profiles, each containing a separate set of user information. The Profile Manager allows you to create, remove, rename, and switch profiles.

Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-remove-switch-firefox-profiles'redirectslug=profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles&redirectlocale=en-US#w_starting-the-profile-manager)

Edit: I see you may have already investigated that aspect.

Yes - thanks been through all that - the link that Inc provides takes you to where all the book marks (backups) are kept. There should be the last 15 backups but only one - so all cleaned out. As indicated I will do a full computer restore from my last backup when I am able and that should be able to put them all back - it is all the passwords etc attached to the bookmarks that concern me most.

Sorry but I do not use clouds. They tend to rain information out to spammers.

There are no passwords attached to bookmarks as such. Passwords can be saved in your profile (signons.sqlite) or they can be entered and an auth cookie stored in the browser. Both stored in the profile.
