View Full Version : Help Needed- Alternator Dead

I'm thinking my alternator has just died or is about to die? Cold start, 10 seconds after starting a sort of bearing binding noise was heard. Shut down restarted and has thrown a P065a code. Clearing just sees it return.
We've just sold up everything to hit the road with Van so it's the first time in my life I have just one car.
Would it definitely be an alternator? Where would I source one from in a hurry? Anyone in SA with one lying around willing to help out?

Try a local dealer first.

Sundays are never any good for sourcing parts..... Not sure about non genuine either from places like Repco. Been reading threads across the last hour but don't seem to be getting any wiser. Denso DAN1105 appear to be what I'm looking for if it can be found so option my simply be Solitaire tomorrow.

Repco are part of what used to be Ashdown Ingram. They'll have access to one. If your in SA use TRS.

Could it be an idler pulley?

I would get the belt off,and have a good look.

There's no further noises occuring just the charging fault error on the dash and the immediate recurring P065A Error leading me to believe, just replace alternator and be done with it.
Other issue is I'm with limited tools having sold almost everything we own (to live on the road) no trolly jacks or ramps etc. For those who have replaced are you removing fan and going in from top or coming in through bottom and side leaving fan in place.?

At those sort of K's,and travelling, yes i would do it anyway.

Never done one on a 3.0L,D4,but i believe it isnt easy.

Good luck with it all.

I did mine on the driveway floor, fan didn't come off, I have this word memory I got it out the bottom.. But that could have been the air con compressor.

Use a Denso alternator, 160 Amp I think they are. Change from the bottom, pretty easy. Fan does not need to come off

Standard Denso has been purchased and collected from TRS in Lonsdale.
Now to fit at some stage over the next couple of days.
Thanks for people's input!

Hi, is the part number that you purchased LR072756? As mine just today has started making a screeching noise for about 5-10sec on a cold start too(202k km)
Thanks Paul.

Had my local mechanic install today. Sounds like a PITA on the SDV6. He felt he had to pull half the front out the car. Ended up having to extend a wire to complete the job which I've read before. Sorry I cannot document the process as it seems it differs quite a bit from the 2.7's.

It’s not easy but not that bad. Nothing had to come out to do mine, but yes, the rear sensor wire is a right pain. It has a connector that for the life of you is impossible to work out from under the car with your hand stretched into that awkward position if you’ve never done it before. It’s why many people just cut the wire, lengthen and solder it - like I did lol.

It’s still a two hour job for an amateur on the SD.
